If you are going to pursue an EU ATPL one day I would suggest starting that about 1 year in advance. I have friends that did it full time in about 6 months, without working. Others took about a year doing it part time. Sucks, but you have to do all the written exams and flight test. There are some designated schools on the states side that are available for EU/JAA ATPL's.
The worst part about all this is that you don't even have a job waiting for you. You can convert everything to European, but just because you hold an European ATPL, passport, and medical, it doesn't mean you have a job there. Still have to apply, be lucky enough to get the chance to interview, and pass the interview. Every now and then I think about, but......
