I think this proves that CAL is not invincible. Everyone has been talking about how despite all the industry turmoil, CAL continues to grow, and should not be "bogged down" by a merger with United. I think the fact that we are seeing 67 aircraft grounded speaks otherwise. No one is safe in this environment (except maybe Southwest because of the price they are paying for fuel).
I continue to believe that ALL 6 legacy airlines will see furloughs come fall, along with several major/national/LCC's out of business. The question is going to be who is going to be on the street's the shortest amount of time. My guess is Delta (that includes the NWA pilots).
Maybe this sudden realization about the financial situation over at CAL will cause the managers to reconsider the merger with UAL. I think that is the best way to manage in this current industry turmoil. Fewer airlines means less competition. Less competition means higher fares. Higher fares means more profits. And more profits are GOOD!!
