They work quite well. With the airlines pulling magazines, food, potable water off the airplanes you can bet if they didn't work and if they were not required, they would be LONG GONE. Anyway, the spray bar deflects the water down and out so it does not go up and into the engines. Other airplanes such as the early Learjets use a tire with a chine on it to do basically the same thing.
