Hi!
I was US based, and am now in Nairobi. There were 5 guys from outside Africa here before me, and I was the only one that stayed. I have been here for 3 months, and have two to go. I will stay if I get a decent job and can't find a US one.
It is a LOT different, both flying and living, so be prepared for big changes. Also, NBO is a LOT better than Lagos, but at Arik, you only have to last 2 months at a time (I'm 6 months on/1 off).
$5500/month is VERY high for an African FO. There was a company in S. Africa that flew into "hotspots" and they were only paying $2500/month (for DC-9s AND MD-80s).
You have to be VERY flexible to make Africa work, especially coming from the US. I met a US corporate pilot (via the internet) who was visiting here here, and he told me there were few US pilots who could make it work.
Good luck!
If U want more info, PM me, or freind me on facebook to see photos/commentary of what the flying is like (username: ATPcliff).
