The only cargo similarity between UPS/FedEx and passenger airlines is that both fly aircraft. UPS and FedEx have an in-house global distribution network that includes IT, trucking, and small package delivery.

Airlines who operate cargo only deliver bulk freight to the airport and third party consolidators take it from there. As you might guess, the yield for bulk freight is far less than that of time critical small packages.
