exactly right there are a lot of guys who share your opinion, just like there are lots of guys who can`t afford to share it, just like there are a lot of guys whose MAIN reason for wanting to stay is thier love of aviation, albeit "sky" has a point its getting harder to love "airline" flying

ICAO is going to 65 and althought they have no real authortiy they do have quite a bit of influence. I don't think there is any doubt that the age will be changing.

Maybe airlines could give an early retirement for those who want to leave at 60

isnt the bill written so as to have a younger pilot in the right seat if the other pilot is above the age of 60???? Why is that?

Randal I know you feel very strongly about this but seriously, whats with the writing of this bill.....who ever wrote it seems to think the older (over 60) pilots need a babysitter.....I dont want to fight with anybody about this but it kind of makes the whole thing a joke..."Your ok to fly past 60 sir but we're gonna put a younger guy with you just in case" thats crap.

I hope the age doesn't increase. That just screws the younger guys who are looking for that 'dream' job. It also will keep the industry where it is at for another 5 years. Overall BAD IDEA.

Smile feel strongly is correct!!

ultra is right i do feel strongly about this issue unfortunately its a bit like the palestinian --Jewish problem no obvious correct ans, --however for what its worth pilots like me who are 60, fall into many many categories such as --
can`t wait to retire, medically should retire, medically could easily fly safely for another 3--10 years, can`t afford to retire, (and it is not fair to classify all in this category as "having wasted thier money"), don`t want to retire (because they love flying, and would be bored to death twiddling thier thumbs, i.e. hate golf lol like me), and on and on, also it sure ain`t my fault that when i flew my 1st "airliner" it was a DC-3 and pilots where real men and nobody even heard of RNAV,the closest thing to GPS was "sputnik" and PMS(for U md-83 boys) was something the wife got which turned her into a real biatch lol, --but now the damm profession has just filled and spilled over with a bunch of "forever whinning-n-moaning" young wimpy pilots and that just about sums it up

At carriers with Union contracts, they generally include retirement provisions. If the age increases, the contract will be in effect until modified by LOA or amended. ALPA took a survey not too long ago and at that time the majority of guys wanted to keep age 60. If you fly under a CBA, it will be a negotiated item.

Age 60 is probably due a change (I do not want it to) but it will need to be integrated into our longtime seniority driven world. Even guys like Randal were once "young wimpy pilots" waiting for their chance and I bet did not shed a tear when someone announced retirement, quit, was fired or otherwise disposed (what was his # ?). I would guess that the majority of guys would not want to work past 60 unless you get the new age changed to the "normal" retirement age in your CBA and then these guys would have to take a hit monetarily in most cases to retire early. In my case (at this point in time !) I will have the max years of service under my A plan by age 53 with early avialable at 55 (with significant penalty). If they make it 60/65 I sure as heck better see my CBA improved to reflect those additional years multiplier. (if we still have an A fund by then).

Bottom line is I do not think the fact of changing the age will push everyone back the same number of years it is increased but there are many issues to resolve.

I wish I could answer ultadrvr's question about the age pairing, all I can say is lawyer C.Y.A., or maybe to help carry their bags ! HAha

Just some thoughts.

heh heh heh i don`t know about the "wimpy" part but young yes and definitely dying to move up for some payback --ok just kidding, maybe the difference was that in those days (at least in BWIA) most of the capts were expatriates and we "the non-wimpy young uns" would not have dared to voice any thoughts like "hey retire already will ya" here is an interesting item when i joined BWIA (aug-1967) at 20 my senority # was 60 and it took 30 years to move up to 10 (the # i had when i went over to Air Jamaica)

Default Who would qualify?

Here's possible solution: Allow a pilot to fly past age 60 only if he can produce a sworn affidavit, attested to by fifty bishops, that he has supported the age extension ever since he began flying, and that whenever he moved up a number due to someone else's forced retirement, he did not enjoy it.
