Oh, poor Roberto.

It may be longer than you think to overturn the current rule. Maybe a year plus! That's a long time on the DC-8 panel!

Yee Haww!!!

A person’s age has never been proven to be the sole determination of one’s ability to safely perform the duties of a FAR Part 121 pilot. There is no evidence that proves that physical and mental decline can be measured by age alone. We have all observed that some people decline in their physical and mental abilities faster than others. There is the experience factor to be considered also. Since the Wright Brothers, the aviation industry has observed that the more experienced pilot is likely to be the safer pilot. Pilots may suffer some varying amounts of decline in physical and cognitive abilities as they age, however, their level of experience could compensate for any physical decline in performance. If an airline pilot is denied flying an airliner for no reason other than because of age 60, then it is the Federal Government’s burden to first prove that all pilots would suffer an unacceptable decline in their ability to fly beyond age 60 which poses an unacceptable safety risk to the flying public. Proof that age alone determines when a FAR Part 121 pilot must not operate aircraft in FAR Part 121 operations is something that Congress has directed the FAA to come up with but the FAA has failed produce such proof. That proof may simply not exist.

The Age 60 Rule is a system disorder that has been perpetuated in our airline industry now for over 60 years. Could today’s Age 60 Rule system disorder be a foreshadowing of our own dystopian future society? System disorders like the Age 60 Rule are usually brought about as a result of human action or inaction, whether stemming from human evil or mere stupidity; the result is a perpetual curse upon an otherwise healthy system. The only reason why the Age 60 Rule is still around today is because of the persistent opposition from the Airline Pilots Association (ALPA) and Allied Pilots Association (APA). ALPA and APA continue to succeed in preventing a change to the Age 60 Rule through their political influence within the FAA along with their lobbying efforts in Congress. The motive behind ALPA and APA resisting a change to the Age 60 Rule reflects the concerns of their junior pilots. The Age 60 Rule is thus a system disorder that has had little chance of being corrected because the pilot groups under age 50 will always represent the majority, maintaining their political power through the forced retirement of pilots over age 60. Junior pilots will always view the forced retirement of all pilots over the age of 60 as essential to their career progression. Thus the majority will always maintain command of a system that succeeds in eliminating competition from the minority. When pilots over the age of 50 finally come to the realization that the Age 60 Rule will adversely impact the remainder of their lives, it is too late as they are now members of the minority and have little power to effect a change.
The opposition from ALPA and APA begs the question; what legitimate labor union would actively support a rule which discriminates against its own members, forces them to leave their jobs and leaves them with reduced benefits? ALPA and APA have been milking the Age 60 rule
for all it's worth for much to long a time.

Hey Klako,

I'm over 50. I don't want the age 60 rule to change.

I must be an anomaly to your "system disorder", eh?

You're sounding a tad whacky, to me!
