Default Hack?

Anybody know the story of the word "hack"? Time hack? Hack your watches?

I don't know where it originates, I've only used it since I became a military pilot. I always imagined "hack" as someone making a chopping motion at the time, like the timekeeper in old drag races. Maybe there's an oldtimer who knows the origin of the word in the Air Force.
