Default Marvel Mystery Oil

To all the piston aircraft owners,
Has anyone ever used this stuff in your planes? I am the maintenance chief at a flying club, and every one of our 5 airplanes have trouble with fouling plugs. I was woundering if you guys think this stuff might help.

Sounds like your club members would benefit from a lesson in proper leaning procedures.

I don't think it would help with fouled plugs.

I do know of it being used to treat a sticking valve and other problems in the "top end" of a cylender.

Agreed, and if that doesn't work, then try the mystery oil.

Mystery Oil in not approved for use in aircraft. If there was ever a problem with one of the airplanes, your arse would be on the line. Not fun.

Have you tried using TCP from Alcor? That is approved and with help with lead fouling. You could also try changing plugs to a hotter burning ones (40Es to 38Es)

We entertained the idea of using this on the Seabee but never did it. We use 100 plus oil and never had a spark plug fowl up yet. During this recent annual, the plugs looked like new. We are using the 38 plugs.

However, we know plenty of other Seabee owners who use Mystery Oil and they say it works great, never ever having a problem with it. Why would you want it aircraft approved? I mean, maybe in his case it would be legal issues, but it would cost three times as much and be the exact same stuff.

I'll 2nd that, and are the plugs properly gapped for the engines???? As far as oils go, the 15w50 seems to be pretty good for a ton of engines from 0-320's to IO-520's in the planes I've flown.

I saw them putting marvel in the engine on a kit plane once. I dont think that you will find it in the AFM or Maintenance manual in a real airplane though.

As referenced above.. yeah, people use MMO in their planes, no, it's not legal. But it's not going to help the lead problem a bit - it's for lubrication, not lead scavenging. TCP is the stuff you need.

That said.. we run some experimental planes and can get away with it.. there's MMO in each of them.

The only thing to remember, if use MMO to fix a sticking valve - it's sticking because the valve guide is worn. MMO will not replace the missing metal in the guide. So.. yeah, it helps lubrication a little, but the problem is not going to go away permenantly until you pull the cylinders and replace some guides.

agreed, fortunatly for me, i do not have any stickky valves. only fouled plugges more often then i want. but i do have many student pilots flying the planes. and im sure that all of them aren't leaning properly for taxi.
