Default What does "per diem" mean?

OK I just went through every page of this knowledge base forum and couldn't find a definition of 'per diem'. For instance it says on here that PSA's "Per Diem" is $1.40/hour. what does that mean exactly? If you can't tell, I'm new here (working on my CSEL right now).

also, Domicile... I'm assuming that just means the airport(s) out of which an airline operates?

domicile is where you are based and per diem is given to help offset the cost of being away from home.

example if you are away for 24 hours for work you are given 1.4x24 $33 bucks to help offset the cost of food and what not while you were away from domicile.

You may be better off doing a search on alot of these or just put all your questions in one mass thread.

I would have put both my question threads in the same thread but in the sticky post at the top of the page it specifically said to put only one topic in each thread so I didn't want to break that rule. That's why I made two separate posts, sorry.

I did search but I went back pages and pages and only found people using them over and over in conversation when talking to other people who already knew what they meant, I didn't find any definition of them so I didn't know what the terms themselves meant exactly. Thanks for explaining them, I understand them now.

I'm not sure how you got episiotomy out of per diem, but the road must have been painful.

"per diem" is Latin meaning, literally, "per day" or "for the day" or "by the day." It is used by many industries, the government, and the military to refer to the costs of daily living expenses associated with travel. A number of expenses could qualify, including not only meals eaten while away from home, but the cost of parking and other fees.

One critical difference between compensation received as per diem and compensation received as salary is the tax implication. While your salary is taxable, your per diem (up to certain limits) is not.

When you see a per diem rate stated as an hourly rate, you condsider the number of hours the pilot spends away from his domicile ("home airport" is one way of explaining that term) and multiply that number of hours by the hourly per diem rate.

Hope that helps.
