Default Define "Stand Ups"

I've heard my friends who are already in the airline industry use this phrase before and one of them gave me a broad idea of what it means, but am I correct in understanding that a "stand up" is an overnight where you basically sleep on a sofa, or in some cases the airplane, at your destination airport because the company won't foot the bill for a hotel?

no...if they told you that they are lying. "high speeds".."Standups".. "CDO's"....all refer to a trip which is an out and back which is typically the last flight out of a hub to an outstation at night.... arriving say between 10 and midnight.... you go to the hotel for say 5 hours or so....then back to the airport for the first flight out of the outstation in the morning back into the hub...generally departing between 5am and 630am..... You are technically on duty while at the hotel hence the term "Continuous duty overnight".... your on duty time will typically be between 10-13 hours ......

I am sure there are some variations to the above theme at different places but that is the general run down as it was when I flew for Eagle....on the ATR there we flew CDO's from JFK to ALB, RDU to HHH, at various times MIA to EYW.... and a few others.

I think by definition, it's an overnight less than 8 hours. Some like them and some hate them. Some people like them because they are home all day, leave at night, and get home early. Most, if not all, companies build the trips so that the turn are the only two flights you do. So, you won't fly all day then do the stand-up. And you'll be done when you get back. XJT doesn't have them - at least I haven't seen them in many years. We don't have any contractual provisions against them, but the company doesn't build them. Although I'm not sure 9:01 is any better than 7:59.

By definition, it's an overnight that isn't an overnight (IE you don't get legal rest). In layman's terms that means that you fly the last flight out, first flight back.

While I can say that there have been an instance or two where I ended up sleeping at the airport or on the aircraft (due to unforseen circumstances resulting in delays), I don't know of any airline that schedules CDO's without booking hotel rooms for the crew.

All I can say is I hate them. I hope I never do one again. I'll take all nighters coast to coast over a stand-up any day....er....night!

When I was domiciled at RDU with AE on the ATR, I bid them to HHH. generally got 15 days a month off..... home by 830 as i lived on 10 minutes from the airport.... i would hate them if you didnt live in domicile.... but they actually went senior during certain times of the year. BIG downside was that you only got guarantee, and the per diem wasnt a lot either....

They pay well. Good to fill out a paycheck (extra 6-7 hours credit)

From what I hear, the stand-ups that SKYW has go senior. I'm fairly certain that the work rules set up result in the pilots netting 1/2 the duty time, so you'll end up crediting 5 or 6 hours of pay for just a couple hours of flying. Maybe everybody's rules are like that though.
