Default ILS Critical Area

A pilot should hold short of the ILS critical area (indicated by the below red ILS sign) when instrument approaches are in use with visibility <= 2 miles, and/or, ceilings <= 800 ft. Or by ATC request.

The early stop prior to the runway is to allow arriving aircraft of shooting the approach without ILS signal interference by nearby aircraft.

Not just auto-land. The ILS critical area prevents having an aircraft interfere with the glideslope for any traffic on the ILS. No one wants to switch to LOC minimums.
