Passenger carriers are dependent upon the willingness (think 9-11) or the ability to afford flying. Many trips are personal (vacation, visiting relatives, etc) and are very price sensitive - to the point of an alternative means of travel - car, bus, etc being considered instead of flying. Business travel is somewhat less dependent upon cost, but it is still price sensitive.
The cargo business - particularly FedEx, UPS is dependent upon a persons need to transport e-commerce purchases, legal documents, etc, etc, etc. This transport needs to be done immediately. Many on demand Cargo carriers are hauling important parts for factories that need a part to keep the line open, etc.
The difference being, hauling people is dependent upon when people can afford to go and are willing to fly. 9-11 did not kill cargo because people still wanted their books from Amazon, etc. Also, unless a Star-Trek telepromppter thing is invented, people will always need to send things immediately and a cargo carrier is the only acceptable way to get that done. FedEx, UPS can spread their increased fuel costs over MILLIONS of customers per day...the passenger carrier can not due to competition.
I think that the cargo business is more stable and sustainable and therefore that is where I think the money is. Just my opinion.
