Default Cargo

Hello,
I am currently still working on my Privates License, but my long term goal is to work for a Cargo company like UPS, FedEx or DHL since I hear they are the most stable and offer the best benefits. Do you have any recommendations on the best career path for me to take? I already have a 4 year degree and plan on beginning ATP (due to their lower rate) in a month for the rest of my licenses.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

-Lily

well if your young you might have a chance. FedEx UPS are coveted jobs in this world. However if you work hard and are able to take a few bumps along the way you will bet there. Good luck and have fun.

Thumbs up Welcome Aboard

Hi Lilly:

You have a bright future ahead of you and even though we are in a "down cycle" at present, this industry is cyclic and will improve.

The cargo carriers are a great place to work and I was a proud "Freight Dog" for many years. You might also think about something like NetJets or possibly an established corporate flight department. In any case, you need to get through commercial, instrument and then the ATP license and build up some time.

If you can get on with a regional carrier, that's probably the easiest way to gain experience and build time but don't discount going the CFI route initially to get experience and build your resume.

Best of luck and if you need this old guys advice, "holler".

G'Luck

Thats where i want to end up too! Just started my 4 year degree, my advisor told me when i first signed up i should leave the school with 800 hours after they hire me on as an instructor. I don't really have a plan yet as how to get into a regional or larger airline/cargo..going to UAA.

Just as a side note, you guys are just getting started, things in the next few years could change everything we know right now. There are some obvious solid ventures out there, but low-timers are obviously not going ot have a shot at that. Just go out, have fun, get the ratings, build the time, and learn as you go.

I have the same goal, but for someone who is working towards my CFI, I have realized that I want to do whatever that will pay the bills. Always have a plan B, a C, then a D. Don't get your heard set on it, work towards it, but be flexible on your goals.

You might want to PM de727UPS. He's a moderator and flies for UPS. His posts are signed as shown below, which might be an interesting place to start with:

Go here to see how I became a UPS pilot:

Keep in mind there are lots of different routes and you can't guarantee that a plan you make now will work. But as said above, stick with it and make sure to keep your spirits up! Good luck and fly safe!!
