Default IAF on DME Arcs with no names...

I have noticed a lot of DME arcs have initial approach fixes out on the radial where the arc starts and sometimes they have names and sometimes they don't...what's the deal with that???

I've looked at a bunch of them, and I can honestly say I can find no rythm or reason.

I noticed that if you have a GPS...the IAF will just be called something like 090 for the 090 radial.

I'd be almost willing to bet that the no-names means you always get vectored onto the arc. You could be cleared to the fix if it has a name, although most of the time you just get vectors or cleared to join the arc anyway.

Whether a DME fix for an arc is named or not has nothing to do with whether you will recieve vectors; rather it is a function of that fix whether it's used for other purposes.

We have that here in Spokane the VOR/DME 3 at GEG. We use the 142 radial to identify the 10 DME IAF. Tell you the truth it makes it harder for ATC, today I got vectors and they set me on the 7.5 DME and it was decreasing. It would be easier if we can navigate on an assigned radial.

I instruct my procedure design students that they should give the fix a name, when it's used in a clearance by ATC. If not, there is no need for a name. However, the FAA may have other guidelines. I am teaching ICAO criteria.
