Default Redeye Flights

What is the technical meaning of a redeye flight? Whenever I hear this term, I think of those late night flights from west to east. Do they have to last 5 hours or more? Is it determined by the time of departure? If so, what time? Is it possible to have a redeye flight departing at 10 pm from SAN to SEA? EWR to SFO? JFK to FRA? What of flights going to, say, Canada?

Hmmm. Deep thoughts this Sunday morning.

Traveling to and from PHX a lot to see family I am reminded of NWA #260 (PHX-DTW) which departs at 10:30pm local and arrives 5:17am local. I would call that a redeye

While I don't think there is a technical defination, it's generally applied to any flight (mostly longhauls) that flies at night and arrives in the morning. I've heard the term used around the world and not just for the transcon flights.

I remember flying UA from IAD to LAX on a redeye. First class was full and there were 3 people in coach, including me. The FA's just told us to go in back if we needed anything.

If you are on a pax jet at 2 am flying anywhere, that's a redeye. Freight dogs do a great chunk of our flying from 10 pm, hub turn outbound to 6 am. Pax flying do mostly days and early pm flying.
