Default contract flying?

I was just wondering, in aviation are there such things as owner operator pilots? People who own their own planes and charter them out to people?

There are alot of companies that do this that are part 91. A single owner or company (doesnt matter) may not need their airplane everyday so they put it on a 135 cert to make extra money and keep the equipment moving.

You could get yourself into a lot of trouble if you simply chartered out your plane on your own because you are now acting as a 135.

Yes, there are a lot of people who own aircraft and charter/lease them out as a means of offsetting costs. A word of caution, do your homework! There are federal laws (14 CFR Part 135) that are very specific and deviating from establish protocols can get you in legal and financial difficulties.

I would suggest going online and checking requirements of FAR's Part 91 and 135 and also, visit your local FSDO or GADO office and ask for an interpretation of exactly what you want to do and whether it meets the letter of the law.

Incidently, as a contract pilot, I've flown for several owners as a "fun, part time gig" and it works out well.

There are several companies that are hiring contract pilots for part-time flying. If you have King Air (BE-200) time or Beechjet time and are current, with a recent sim check, send resumes.
