John Travolta was forced to make an emergency landing in Ireland on Monday
while piloting his private Boeing 707 from Germany to New York.

The actor, who was flying back to the USA after promoting his new movie Wild Hogs in Germany, landed safely at Shannon Airport after his Boeing 707-138B suffered “technical difficulties”, thought to be engine-related. He was said to be unhurt but shaken by the dramatic incident. The 53-year-old, the only private individual to own a Boeing 707, serial number N707JT, hired another aircraft and completed the journey while the 707 was grounded for repairs.

Eight years ago the star suffered a similar mid-air drama when his plane lost an engine and he was forced to make an emergency landing in Boston

That's a very nice looking panel on the 707. Good on him! I believe the Boston emergency included an electrical failure, leaving him on standby instruments in IMC.

At least he didn't have that beautiful 707 crash right after Wild Hogs did at the box office. Maybe L Ron Hubbard helped save him?

I wonder how many total hours Travolta's got and how many of those are logged in the 707?

Watch your mouth Hobo! L. Ron was a visionary, largely impart because of the superior intelligence the alien life-forms that populated this planet implanted in his psyche! Second, Thomas Cruise is the reincarnation! I guess your going to trash talk him next?!?!?

K - might go puke now - I think several of my brain cells committed suicide while I wrote that...

So uhhhhhhh how exactly does he get the his 707 and his Gulfstream GV out of their parking spots and onto the runway? Wonder if he pays a guy with a tug? Looks a little tight in there to be honest...

found this, could be a little outdated now, but its a general idea

"Since earning his wings in 1974, John Travolta has logged close to an astounding 5,000 hours for reasons both professional and personal. He has trained in cockpits as diverse as his acting roles. They include qualifying as a captain in the Gulfstream ll, Lear Jet 24, Hawker 1A, Citation 1 and 2 and Vampire Jet, and as first officer in Boeing B.707. Following extensive sessions at Qantas's Sydney headquarters and with Boeing in Seattle, he has also successfully completed B.747-400 First Officer simulator training. Qantas Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Geoff Dixon presented Mr Travolta with his wings at Los Angeles airport on 24th June 2002."

I had breakfast with one of his pilots several years ago. He actually liked flying with Travolta - the guy takes it very seriously and is very procedures oriented and stays current. In the cockpit, he's just another crewmember and has respect for what it takes to get to that level. I'd rather fly for a guy like that than some dufus that just sits in the back and *****es about the turbulence.

It's easy to knock a guy that has money and fame, but if I were in his shoes, why wouldn't I do exactly what I wanted to do?

travolta is a very good guy...my bud used to be one of his backup pilots on his lear during college...if he was in LA or NYC and needed the plane my bud would fill in the right seat and go get john and then deadhead home..we used to go out to his house in spruce creek and hang out in his hangar...then he was hassled about the noise issue with the lear...got the GIIB and then moved the airplane to DAB until moving out of spruce creek alltogether...he was very cordial and friendly...

According to some aviation mag I was reading the other day, the FAA is telling him that he can't land at 17FL anymore. Supposedly the runway is in poor shape and the 707 shows a little wear from it. About two yrs ago I landed out there and watched him take off, fly over to PIE, and land back at 17FL, using every inch of the DS on the ARR end, the reason for the flight? He went grocery shopping, I sh*t you not.

I met a couple of Travolta's pilots as well. They were extremely nice and even let me take a picture or two of the GII. One of them was leaving for SWA and the other one was upgrading into the 707.

Here's a nice blurb from that.

FIRST 1800 FT OF RY 18 DETERIORATING WITH POT HOLES AND SEVERE CRACKING.
1 ASPHALT SURFACE IS ONLY 2 INCHES THICK. PAVEMENT STRUCTURE CAN ONLY SUPPORT LIGHT LOAD SINGLE WHEEL ACFT. HEAVIER ACFT MAY CAUSE IMMEDIATE STRUCTUAL DAMAGE TO THE DETERIORATED SURFACE AND MAY GENERATE FOD.

Guess that means "NO 707's!!!" In the nicest way possible:confused:

I have been in there several times. They just completed a "revamp" of the runway (that Travolta mostly paid for), so I'm sure that it is in great shape now.

Few years ago I flew some people to DAL to meet up with JT for a book signing. I asked if I could come along.
Was allowed to go to the back of the bldg where he was arriving. He met all the big whigs that were standing there and then I was introduced to him as their pilot.
He dropped everything he was doing with them and wanted to talk flying!
No kidding, they were wanting him to go inside, where a thousand screaming women were waiting and he delayed it, as he really just wanted to talk flying.
We spent a good 15 minutes talking about the 707, etc. He was a real treat to talk to, very friendly. Just wish my bosses hadn't been standing there, so I could have begged for a job! I'd love to fly that 707!! :D
No scientology for me though!!

I don't know much about the two. But besides the length, what are the differences that make it a seperate type rating?

It's not a separate rating. Mine was gained via the EC-135 and says B707/B720. The story I heard was that United was interested in Boeing's planned short-range 707, but felt awkward explaining to their BOD why they now wanted a 707 after having recently rejected it in favor of the DC-8. Boeing replied: "No problem. Did we say 707? Oh, no -- this is a completely new airplane... it's the ...umm... 720!" ;) Then, of course, they got it certified as a common type with the 707.

I see, thanks. I made the ASSumption it was seperate because it was listed that way in Travolta's data base listing. I tought if they were the same it would be 707/720 instead of what it says.

"Travolta is a licensed pilot and owns five airplanes, including an ex-Australian airliner, the Qantas 707-138. The plane bears the name Jett Clipper Ella in honor of his son Jett and his daughter Ella. Pan Am was a large operator of the 707 and used Clipper in their names. The 707 aircraft bears the marks of Qantas, as Travolta acts as an official goodwill ambassador for the airline wherever he flies. His US$4.9 million estate in the Jumbolair subdivision in Anthony, Florida is situated on Greystone Airport with its own runway and taxiway right to the door.[9]"

OCALA - John Travolta has denied published reports this week that he had to make an emergency landing in Shannon, Ireland, while piloting his Quantas 707 jet on a trip from Germany to New York.

The actor, who lives in Anthony, released the following statement.

"Thank you for your concern," Travolta said. "There was never an emergency. It was just a fuel stop and when we went to depart, the #2 engine needed a new starter."

The story about the emergency landing first appeared in the New York Post and
British Sun. The Ocala Star-Banner published a story about the landing, attributing it to those publications.

A spokesman for Shannon Airport had said Travolta was there due to "technical difficulties."
