Merger talks between US Airways Group Inc. (http://charlotte.bizjournals.com/charlotte/gen/US_Airways%20Group%20Inc_5016CDC43AB549DCA5E2780E2 8381831.html) and United Airlines (http://charlotte.bizjournals.com/charlotte/related_content.html?topic=United%20Airlines) appear to have fallen apart, The New York Times reports, citing unnamed sources familiar with the negotiations.
The newspaper says the board of United parent UAL Corp. (http://charlotte.bizjournals.com/charlotte/gen/UAL_Corp_10A10D724C5C4806A984837D8A6716A0.html) (NASDAQ:UAUA) and chief executive Glenn Tilton have recently questioned the proposed deal. One source said senior executives at both airlines and the bankers and lawyers working on the deal have put it on "permanent hold,'' the newspaper reports.
Last month, speculation arose regarding a possible United-US Airways deal after Continental Airlines Inc. (http://charlotte.bizjournals.com/charlotte/gen/Continental_Airlines%20Inc_7270C1BE3648438FBB9AB12 FE2DA9FB1.html) (NYSE:CAL) said it would not seek a merger partner. Houston-based Continental had reportedly been in talks with United.
In 2000, US Airways and United attempted a merger, but the deal was blocked by the U.S. Department of Justice over antitrust concerns. US Airways Chief Executive Doug Parker has done little to squelch speculation about another deal.
Arizona-based US Airways (NYSE:LCC) has its largest hub at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport. The carrier operates 3,800 flights per day to more than 230 destinations in the Americas and Europe.
