Today I flew from MEM to MCO on the jumpseat of a NWA *gulp* Airbus. I must say that there were lots of seats in the back where I could have ridden, but I went hat in hand... YES I ACTUALLY HAD MY HAT... and asked the captain if it would be OK for me to ride up front with them. I got a bit of a funny look at first, but he said.. sure, whatever, and we walked down the jetway. Primarily my interest was to see how differently we operated the airplanes, but since I'm a Boeing guy, the whole sidestick traytable thingy had me a bit freaked. (not really) But after all the niceties and stuff were thru and we were airborne, it was just like being in any cockpit at DAL (I quit looking at the panels though) We talked about layovers and the weather and stuff I can't mention here :D and I even answered some questions about the contract that they were a little fuzzy on. (I got 'em now... hehehe) Turns out that.. believe it or not, and I can't PROVE this... that we all put our pants on the same way. So I guess what I am wanting to get across is that however all this unpleasantness with the SLI turns out, I will be glad to have my new shipmates on board. Thanks to Paul and Stefan for an enjoyable ride. You guys are welcome on my jumpseat anytime. (That's all ya'll NWA guys)

Okay- I have to know if it's true! Is it true that in the A320 cockpit you can actually talk and hear yourself think?? (As opposed to the 737-800 scream box). Please tell me it's true!

I jumpseat a bit on Delta as well. Most every guy has been a real gentleman. We're really a lot alike.

But,

It does insult your landings every approach. That French guy screaming "RETARD RETARD" just makes my blood boil!

Tsquare, we all need to do what you did more often. Get to know each other vs taking that nap and letting the beverage cart hit you in the knee.

Good on ya,
Ferd <-----always a Boeing boy

Or even quieter than that, the MD88/90.

Sorry, after reading two hours of SLI testimony, I feel the need to rebut everything.;)

RETARD RETARD

I thought it was "Retard, retard, retard" - Twice as a verb, once as a noun...

Good post, Ts. I too am looking forward to being one big happy family.

Also, if you can get used to the 320 then you are a better man than me.

Like Ferd, Boeing/MD/DC forever!!! (That Airbus thing scares me.)

If it's only saying "RETARD, RETARD" Then it is not saying "English Pig dog! I fart in your general direction!" which is when ou are really screwing up!

Wha was that you said? Actually, it was pretty quiet. NWA has TELEX headsets as the installed version; and I could hear what was going on with them. Is that fleet wide? You NWA guys are gonna love the David Clarks and some of the older ones that are occasionally found too... (Think John Wayne and a 50 mission crush...) orrrrrrr http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3rBW94EPyc

Do yall really use the David Clarks ?

Some of the old nines smell like old leather "Narco" headsets.

Yup... actually, I like them best. I have tried ALL the other headsets on the market except some of the noise cancelling ones, and none of them seem to work for me (personally) as well as the DCs. An earplug in one ear, and the big cup on the other, and I'm good to go. I think I am an exception by far though...

Heyas,

The Telexes are fleet wide. You are free to use your own headset, providing it's TSO'ed. The Airbuses (naturally) require an adapter. They are all in very good repair, but MX will change them out on request if you find one that's trashed (I found a couple swimming in the DC-9s bait well...grrrr)

A miniscule minority uses their own headsets, and a tiny fraction of those uses any sort of ANR.

I have never seen anyone use a DC. In fact, I haven't seen anyone use a DC since I quit my 1900 gig in 93.

Interesting. I've only ever seen one person actually use the supplied headset, and I'm an '01 hire. I'd have to say, unscientifically, probably 98+% of DL pilots use their own headsets. Me, I'm using my old beat up Telex 750s until I can convince the Sec/Tres of the house that the new Tbones are the way to go!

But, half of that fraction don't reinstall the ship's headset after they take their's with them. Then, I get to find where they hid mine, hook it up and then make my push request while getting the stink eye from the captain:D.

Yea, I've fished my share out of the bait well in the -9...yuck.
