This is being typed on a Droid... please forgive grammer errors or lack of detail. Anyway, a coworker and I (IT people) were discussing the recent AA incident where a 777 almost ran into two C17's... then I told them about TCAS after we calculated how much reaction time they had given the distance mentioned by the media and the speeds we assumed. He asked why tcas doesn't simply perform the avoidance manuever automatically (linked with autopilot or whatever) when above certain altitudes or under certain cirumstances. Anyone have any good technical reasons (aside from cost, or faa approval or whatever). I know autopilots are limited in control deflection and what not, but it does seem possible with an airbus like system... I'm not for or against, just looking to learn something. Thanks all.
