For those of you that are retired from the service and collecting a retirment check, if you were to get laid of or "down sized" from your second career are you able to collect unemployment? Or do they look at the retirment pay each month as income and take that option away?

Sorry, I can't find you a good link but this is what I remember.

It depends on the state and you may receive a reduced amount.

Usually, yes, but it depends on your state. You will have to claim the income and it's source, but, at least in my case, they still paid unemployment.

Entirely up to the state. SC considered it all as income making you ineligible for any unemployment compensation.

I was just wondering because my Father In Law owns a company that lays off about half of its workers in the winter. Most of them collect unemployment while off but he has some that can't get unemployment because they have a pension from the Coal Mine. He tries to keep those guys on but the others pretty much get a paid vacation on unemployment. It made me wonder what the retired military got when they were layed off. Sounds like the same deal.

For the Guard guys here, in California at least (YMMV), drill pay does not count against you but additional orders do.

Unemployment Insurance is no paid vacation unless you consider a Motel 6 in Yuma a vacation. And its not welfare, its funded from payroll deductions and taxes on the employers.

These guys get every winter off, get paid a percentage of their normal pay and don't have to look for other work. That is a paid vacation in my opinion. Now for the people who loose their job, get the unemployment check and beat the bushes for a new job then yes the deserve the money. For those that collect the check while laying on the couch then no the don't. Again just my opinion.

Unemployment insurance ins't 100% covered by the employer's premium. It is also subsidized with state money which directly or indirectly comes from the fed which comes from the taxpayer. Sorry if it ruffles feathers but anyone collecting unemployment and not actively looking for a job or to better themselves, is collecting welfare.

Not sure what the Motel 6 in Yuma has to do with anything.

A great example of someone playing the system is one guy that works for him. He volunteered to be layed off because after he figured what he pays in gas to drive 45 minutes each way to work, what he saved on lunches and misc things durring the day at work, he actually made the same amount being layed off doing nothing. He has been layed off for 6 months now and is at the bar every day. He, again in my opinion, is no better than a woman with 10 kids from 15 fathers laying on the couch collection welfare.

Are you lumping in a few extra dudes because she isn't sure who the father is for a few kids?

Now...15 kids from 10 fathers makes sense but 10 from 15 is just fuzzy math...just sayin...:)
