Anyone on the airbus at United received their iPad yet?

Just curious, word is airbus guys getting them first but haven't heard any confirmation of that yet.

Soon. Some beta guys have been carrying for a while. I think they're going to the LCA guys first then the line pukes. I thought I read something about this month, but cannot recall.

There's no rush......I played with one (an Airbus PI's) the other day. In it's current form it's nearly useless (except as a paper weight)! In fact here's an admission from an email sent to instructors:

The link is easy to use and it will let you know if there is availability on the day you want to schedule your appointment. XXXX will also have some documents to help you through the process such as iPad user manual, ALPA LOA, etc..

Plan on about 60 minutes or so depending on wireless/I/T bandwidth etc.. Currently XXXX is a "One Man Band" and soon will have more support to distribute. I know many of you will have questions and hopefully XXXX will be able to answer many of them on the spot. Please be patient as you will realize that in its current state you will have limited functions and access to a limited number of documents. Our team is compiling a list of documents applicable to the I/E group and will have them available soon. Currently iBooks is the PDF/Manual reader installed. A UAL specific "reader" is currently being developed and hopefully will be ready for BETA testing in the near future. There will also be a link set up for critiques and comments from all of you.

Shocked that a group run by Fred the Fossil can turn an iPad into an expensive piece of gorilla glass...

Nope and nothing coming soon. Apparently huge issues remain from Sr leadership's understanding/acceptance to major software hurdles; e.g. indexing pages, 1,2,3 vs 15.30.1. Oh, and the App store is currently removed, so no ability to get a WX app or anything silly like that. Not that anyone was, but don't hold your breath.

GPS was non-functional airborne and the page layout of Jepp charts was horrible. Flt Manual and search access were cumbersome and frankly far inferior to the paper we've been using for years. Pretty sad implementation of what should have been a great product. Not surprised, but still disappointing. Funny thing is that he agreed, and said that training was basically nil and nobody really knew what to do with them. Par for the course, I guess.

Didn't Jeff call the new United a "giant IT company with wings?" If this is the best we can do, maybe we should go back to being an airlines that flies airplanes.

Not holding my breath but I'm glad I am glad I am not lugging a flight bag around.

Big ole paper weight to keep that weather and NOTAM packet in place is about the only use I see for that so far.

Yeah, we are still draggin that crap around at CAL. I cannot wait for the thing to dump a couple of manuals and ONLY have to carry Jepps. WAFJ

If you go to "ships sets" you won't have to carry anything. You won't have to do revisions. You won't be responsible for anything but making sure that they are current during the preflight (takes 2 seconds to bend over and read the tab).

Best of all....there is nothing to notify you to contact the crew desk (unlike the IPad).

Bingo. That is one of my biggest fears with the iPad and CAL management.

I've seen the initial issue of the machine and while it is woefully handicapped at this point by the FAA, in reality it should morph into a fairly useful device. I certainly hope that it does, especially if I am required to schlep it around. I want to see it bolted to the plane.

The version I have heard is that 2 will be eventually bolted to each airplane with the idea that those have jepps and the one issued to us is manuals and jepp backup. I guess that is contingent on what plan is hit by the dart that is the primary method of planning anything around here.

CAL's not getting ship sets. When they found out UAL actually pays someone to keep them updated CAL decided it was cheaper to just let employees who spent decades getting to their professional level and get paid $150k/yr continue doing it for free.

You may be confusing Jepps with CAL's current reserve rules.
