Anyone going to the games ?
From what I've been reading it looks like the locals will be more than happy after the games are over.

Nope. If fact after the heterophobia and hoplophobia shown recently I'm actively avoiding it..... To be honest though I am only really interested in the archery.

Hoplophobia-it has been a very long time since I have heard that word, it is most appropriate and seldom heard.Well done.

I love the Olympics (despite what USA Swimming did to my cousin before the Beijing Games in 2008), and thought of going to London, but not after I read this (http://worldnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/07/16/12774422-tsa-agents-to-staff-uk-airports-during-olympics?lite&__utma=14933801.1227448527.1342406254.1342509214.1 342536073.8&__utmb=14933801.2.10.1342536073&__utmc=14933801&__utmx=-&__utmz=14933801.1342406254.1.1.utmcsr=(direct)|utm ccn=(direct)|utmcmd=(none)&__utmv=14933801.|8=Earned%20By=msnbc%7Ccover=1^12= Landing%20Content=Mixed=1^13=Landing%20Hostname=ww w.nbcnews.com=1^30=Visit%20Type%20to%20Content=Ear ned%20to%20Mixed=1&__utmk=152164921).

From the article above.

"The stupid part of this, which I have argued to them, is that there are tons of gay couples on the Olympic team who will be rooming together, so we are being discriminated against because we are heterosexual,"

No, that's not true. They have a special exemption being part of the Pole Vault or Bush Diving competitions.

I hate the Olympics, which is a quadrenniel celebration of nationalism and xenophobia.

Idiots at American TV networks that only show events where Americans will win the gold medal. That, and womens gymnastics.

Endless human interest stories and 5 minute biopics--if I wanted to watch that I'd watch Oprah.

I don't care about getting back to the Olympic center for thoughts from Bob Costas or Jim Gray.

If they treated it like CSPAN and showed competitions 24/7 without commentary and marketing I would watch. Otherwise you can keep it.

"The Olympics are a giant exercise in sports socialism—or crony capitalism, if you prefer—where the profits are privatized and the costs socialized. The games never pay for themselves because they are designed not to. That’s because the International Olympic Committee (an opaque “nongovernmental” bureaucracy made up of fat cats from various countries) pockets most of the revenue from sponsorships and media rights (allegedly to promote global sports), requiring the host country to pay the bulk of the costs. Among the very few times the games haven’t left a city swimming in red ink was after the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, when voters, having learned from Montreal’s experience, barred the use of public funds, forcing the IOC to use existing facilities and pick up most of the tab for new ones.

Even that’s far from fair. If anything, the Olympics should be compensating the host city for the hassle and inconvenience, not the other way around. The only reason they don’t is because the Cold War once stirred retrograde nationalistic passions, blinding the world to the ass-backwardness of the existing arrangement. Londoners are signaling that this can’t go on.

ROFL ! That's funny.
Now back to our regularly scheduled topic.:D

Looks some of the venues had some empty seats and it would have been nice to open them up to those who really could'nt afford tickets.
What do you guys think of the coverage so far ?

I must say, the international impact of the badminton scandal no doubt kept the world in tight suspense.
My question is this, how can badminton be an olympic sport and not bullfighting?
Real sport involves something that may seperate your head from your torso, everything else is just a silly little trifle.:D

Revolutions and civil wars have always been great sport, and they require no expensive special venues or corporate sponsorship, they take place in-situ.

Sport: Jousting with Sam and Charlie Tom Wolfe - Air War Over Vitnam December (http://www.scribd.com/doc/37379973/Tom-Wolfe-Air-War-Over-Vitnam-December#)

I am sure our readers can imagine many more examples. But badminton? Please.

Girls on a trampoline may prove to be an exception.

I might have missed it somewhere but I have always been curious about how these people go about getting trained and what kind of investment they are looking at .
Do they get any money from the sponsors that advertise ?

According to my cousin the family pays all initial training fees. These kids usually start at a very early age and their training continues in college. My little cousin got a scholarship to Stanford. Sponsors come out of the woodwork when you show signs of potential and money starts when you win. I went to her wedding - very expensive affair which her father said was mostly paid for herself with plenty leftovers to spare.

Because anything can happen to shut off the sponsorship flow of money they better have a backup plan. Hers was a masters degree also from Stanford. Not unlike being a pilot in more ways than one. Our family has always believed in education.

Urban sportsmen relax during a lull in the revolution in Syria, taking time to chug a two liter Pepsi and have a few smokes while checking their computer for APC posts and getting the latest intel sent from CENTCOM. Sponsored by FN, makers of the FAL-still the right arm of the Free World.
