I wonder why the pilot chose Damascus when he could have landed in any number of airports nearby?

So there are "some clashes" near Beirut, and they decide to divert to an active war zone? I'm missing something ...

Well, Damascus is a full service airport and the capitol of Syria and a number of reputable airlines have daily service in there. It's not Kabul you know? ;)

It IS close by, but the random artillery rounds would certainly put me off. :D They do still show service into there.

Apparently there really wasn't a fueling problem (in general, at least). Either the airline was overreacting or AF may have credit problems popping up at some places.

Sounds like someone trying to make some fast cash.

Gotta wonder why they would divert to Syria to being with.
If your coming from Europe going to Beruit, Nicosia is a better choice.
