Default Shanghai ~ Hilton

Lots and lots to do in Shanghai on layovers, I'll just touch on a few...

Food: Malone's American Grill is very popular and within walking distance. Big menu selections, expat atmoshpere, bands, pool table and dart boards on the 3rd level.

Shopping: The address to the indoor 'mall' is 580 Nanjing West Road. Has everything; shoes, purses, cloth, electronics, ski gear, etc, etc

Entertainment: A very popular place for music, food and night life is XinTiaDi. Great German brew pub, jazz club, many restaurants and bars (a must see). Another place that is good for night life and drinking is Tongren Rd and is less than a 10 min walk from hotel, also is close to Malone's.

There is a great indoor go-cart track that serves beer and appetizers. Its about a 20 min drive from hotel but is definately fun to go race. Also, across the highway behind the City Plaza building is a good chinese circus show. No animals, just a bunch of cool human performances ($30).

Is the indoor 'mall' you are talking about the replacement for the old outdoor market that used to have all the knock-offs? I haven't been to Shanghai for quite a while, but I understand the market closed down last year.

Is the indoor mall as good? Same type deals?

There is also a lot of good info about Shanghai here but it needs to be updated....especially regarding the knock-off market.

Some others I remember:

O'Malleys (42 Tao Jiang Rd) - Irish bar with a ton of ex-pats

Also the Maoming Lu District between Fuxing and Yonjia roads. There are a bunch of good bars and restaurants there.

Excellent Chinese food at a place called 1221. Ask the concierge. $2 cab ride each way-great food, good price.

JB massage behind the Hilton. No freaky deaky-just good massage.

City Diner, down from Malones (go out Malones, go right) corner of Nanjing and Tongren Rds. Good American greasy spoon, open 24/7 and has beer. Decent breakfast, good prices.

There's a restaurant called "The Grape" or "The Grapery". The concierge knows where it is. You could walk past it if you walked to the outdoor market from the hotel. Great food, cheap, english menu's and the girls love us and treat us great!

Default Supermarket

Someone told me about a supermarket down the street from the Hilton. Said it had western and asian style food (deli set-up) plus microbrews that I recognize. Anyone have a vector?

Also a great place for breakfast in what used to be the lobby area of the Ritz on Nanjing Lu called Element Fresh. Great coffee. About a 10-12 min walk.
