Just for you guys, starting Oct 20th. The new 61.51:

"A sport, recreational, private, commercial, or airline transport pilot may log pilot in command flight time for flights-

(B) The pilot performing the duties of pilot in command is undergoing an approved pilot in command training program that includes ground and flight training on the following areas of operation—
(1) Preflight preparation;
(2) Preflight procedures;
(3) Takeoff and departure;
(4) In-flight maneuvers;
(5) Instrument procedures;
(6) Landings and approaches to landings;
(7) Normal and abnormal procedures;
(8) Emergency procedures; and
(9) Postflight procedures;
(C) The supervising pilot in command holds—
(1) A commercial pilot certificate and flight instructor certificate, and aircraft rating that is appropriate ...; or
(2) An airline transport pilot certificate and aircraft rating that is appropriate ...; and

I highlighted the bold for you.

Sounds like the FAA is rapidly adapting the regs to the realities of low-time regional airline pilots...

So you do have to have the 'real' PIC sign your log book (starting 10/20/09). As I've said before, I don't know a single Captain who would sign off on an FO's logbook for this.

I'm increasing believing that my citation from 1992, while perhaps valid @ the time (FO can log time as PIC for the purposes of the 250 PIC requirement of the ATP, even though the FO is not qualified to be PIC) is no longer valid, having been superseded @ some point, if not in the past, then certainly on 20 Oct. 2009.

Good find, 'Twin Wasp'.

IF you are flying part 121, you can count right seat time "acting as pilot in command, under the supervision of the PIC"....

I hold an ATP.
I have less than 250 hrs of "real" PIC
I have about 4000 hrs SIC 121 time.

Of course when I was getting my type rating I asked the CP and the FAA about this, and was told that this was not a problem as I could count my SIC time under the provisions of the above mentioned reg. Of course I would never claim to a prospective employer or peer that I had PIC time in anything that I wasn't signing the logbook for.
Also, this was done prior to 20 Oct 2009
