Opinions wanted on Aviation Career Expo
Hi there!
There is an aviation Career expo coming up and I was wondering if anyone has attended it in the past and if they thought it was beneficial.
I finished flight school a year ago and I have had no bites yet in terms of job opportunities as a pilot. The idea of a career expo sounds great to make contacts, meet employers and find out about non-airline pilot jobs out there!
The only thing is, I would have to travel to go there (it's in Las Vegas, I'm in Idaho) and I really don't have extra money to be spending on something that's not going to be beneficial, so I want to make sure that this is a quality expo that has many exhibitors and job placement professionals.

I poked around the website, what is conspicuously absent is a list of which employers are attending. Before you spend money you want to that the employers attending will be...
1. Appropriate for your experience level, ie don't pay money to talk to DAL, SWA, FDX if you have 250 hours.
2. Actually hiring, or planning on doing so soon.
Assuming you are very low time (<500 hours), there may not be many suitable employers attending...entry level employers can usually get enough people locally. Networking is good, but you need to be in the ballpark experience wise...a MLB team scout is not going to take a little-leaguer seriously.

I think this might be the first foray into job fairs for JetCareers, or at least in a long long time. No telling who they have lined up. Not sure what to tell y about that one.
FltOps is hosting another expo in Atlanta on the 28th. They have 10 airlines ther to interview, and a few more contract positions. Ive been to the FltOps fair in Dallas, and thought Lou Smith did a fantastic job balancing exposure to the recruiters, educational opportunities, and networking opportunities, all at a fair cost.

Who is attending
Not exactly alot of companies attending.

I am going just to speak with Delta. I payed for the cheaper admission just for the afternoon since I only want to speak with Delta. Everyone I know at Delta was offered interviews after going to a job fair and they all swear it is the best way to get on there. However, for low time guys (under 2500 or so) it may not be worth going. Good Luck

This job fair is actually just an outgrowth of JetCareers' annual forum meet-and-greet, which in itself has previously yielded a lot of great job opportunities through networking informally. Even if the companies represented don't float your boat in terms of employment opportunities, maybe meeting some of the people in attendance will.
Either way, why not just go join the forums at JetCareers and start participating even if you don't go to the job fair?

I can not speak for whether or not he gets weekends off but it is auto generated based on posts. Similar to a seniority type of deal. You have one post so are a new hire and he has more and now gets weekends off. I think there are a few others as well.
Except for Rickair....you will never get a tag line like Rick. There are 4 forces of flight; lift, thrust, weight and Rick.

Plan on working all of your weekends and holidays as a new hire, that's the way it works being on reserve or junior line holder. There's an F-15 IP position with the 104th at Barnes (yes, I applied) and it's a lot of weekends, but a GS-13 is nice paper!
