Default If you had to choose a non-flying career...

....You would?

This is sort of a spin-off of a recent thread I started. Very curious to see what you all have to say.

Truck Driver?

FBO Manager? (you can still work in aviation, you just can't fly).

I think this job would be quite acceptable. Not easy to get, though...

Pretty cool! And the best part is you could live in NOLA. Or is that a bad thing? I love NOLA so I'd be ok with it, I think. Then again it's easy to love a place when you are on vacay. Perhaps the incessant humidity would get to me after a while. Ha!

Anyway, thanks for the link Tom!

It all depends on your education, interests, aptitude, and previous experience. If you have the time and money to go back to school you could do almost anything. The answer to that question would be different for every individual pilot.

But, yes porn star has it's appeal...

Something with good pay and lots of time off (in blocks)... Boats, Trains, Oil Rigs, and so on.

It is very satisfying bringing a ship into and out of port and making an approach onto a pier or departing a pier.

It's more challenging without tugs - I've only done that once, relying only on your linehandling crews and engines.

But getting a job as a harbor pilot - you really have to know people / networking and you have to know the ins and outs of the harbor conditions, and the people that do it really love their job, someone has to die (of natural causes - is the running joke) before there's an opening.

That's why you almost never see a "careers page" for harbor pilots.

You'd need an any ocean/any tonnage license, or experience as a navy chief small boat OIC, and the competition is stiff because it pays good and you're home every night. My neighbor gave up his super-tanker captain job to become a columbia river pilot, got tired of being at sea nine months/year.

Career changing airplane pilots don't walk into harbor pilot jobs.

The perfect job would be uniform is pijamas and work from home. 85K or higher. Many IT related jobs are work from home as are many consulting type jobs.
