Agree with this. But from the OP's limited bit of given information about his situation combined with being able to gateway from a potential reserve job location, it may be a good deal. Especially if it's as I mentioned, where his reserve job is is east Jesus bumfornication sh1tzville and will require a 2 legger commute to most legacy domiciles (to include SW).

And I'm not sure if you've ever commuted, but the paid ticket once or twice a month can beat the 3-5 times a month commuting. Plus paying for hotels, crashpads, etc.

AGAIN, my point was based simply on the info provided by the OP.

And I would agree with your point, SW for all intents and purposes can be put in the "legacy" category. Christ, I just said that. Prepare to be invaded by the hat wearing Octuplet breasted jacket wearers to hijack the thread........

Atlas is not a destination airline and gateway is certainly not a good enough reason to bypass a career at any major.

And as often gets beat to death the Atlas hiring thread, Atlas retirement plan suuuuuuuuuuuuuucks.

The 15-16% the Defined Contribution exclusive of 401K simply can't be beat. Nor can SW's lower amount.

But you point stands, NOT a good enough reason to bypass a legacy/LCC job as far as the earnings metric goes.

This is great info guys, much appreciated.

The easy access from the reserve base is a factor, although that's largely because there are a lot of guys senior to me out here and not a lot of flights out of the local airport. Not a show stopper, as there are a couple of airports about an hour's drive away, but it is a consideration.

I'm about a 5 hour drive from Atlanta; if I get hired by Delta or SW I've considered buying a used Tesla and just driving it like crazy to avoid the stress of trying to get a spot on a flight. I suspect this has more to do with me wanting a Tesla than anything else, but still...

I also think of SW as being in the same category as the legacies, but I don't want to start anything.

The other main thing is destinations/schedule changes.
Atlas has an incredible amount of major scheduling changes...If u don't like that, u don't want atlas.
Swa doesn't do Intntl yet.
DAL goes to some Intntl destinations, but it's relatively senior.
Atlas goes everywhere, on the 747, on day one.

Days off: An atlas 767 guy posted he was at home 150 nights the last 6 months. He lives near his base of CVG, and makes about 20% less than if he was on the 747.

I'm optimistic about the next contract at Atlas. I believe we will become much more competitive with legacy carriers in regards to compensation.

Anyway, I know these aren't as important as quality of job conditions, pay etc. However, image and self-esteem are important and I would feel very important in a Delta uniform..... and the hat!

Really ACE! I hope this is some kinda joke thingy that I am not picking up on, 'cause if not......well........ I know I know "it's gotta be me."

Was that really "days off", or mainly days that he didn't get called on reserve ? Sorry, unused reserve days are not the same as days off. All it takes is one "got it made, they haven't called me yet" reverie followed quickly by a callout to lead to a fatigue incident.

Even on the 767 atlas doesn't have hardly any reserve pilots, and the reserve lines are usually changed to flying before or soon after reserve starts...nothing like reserve lines at regular airlines.

Those days were probably mostly days offs and working days where he was at his base, so at home, with no flying...in between operating legs. If he didn't live near CVG on his work days he would've been sitting in a hotel waiting for his next operating leg.

Gateway:

It is NOTHING like buying a cheap ticket. If something goes wrong, you just call travel and they rebook you, get you a hotel, whatever you need...and scheduling will change your schedule to fit your new travel plans if necessary.. You can also get "Alternate Travel" to fly somewhere that is not your gateway...one reason why we have LOTS of pilots living overseas.

I know one guy who is at atlas and trying to get to jet blue...because of gateway. He lives near BOS. He likes atlas because they fly him out of BOS. He wants jet blue to be based out of BOS. He has zero interest in any other carriers.

These are a few reasons why SOME people like atlas...for others it is a bad option...it depends on your individual situation.
