lack of recent experience

I've had several friends retire non-current after final staff or non-flying command assignments. They all got interview invites 5-6 months after starting with a regional. If you can do 3 months at regional pay while on terminal leave, that'll take some of the sting out.
I think major airlines want to see you succeeded in training and get a taste of 121 operations...then you're golden!

I am in a similar situation, my airline went out of business. Got a non-flying job. I have lots of 121 experience.
I think the examples above are a little different. Let's face it, the airlines like military pilots. So for them, probably makes sense, get some 121 time. But if you have a lot of 121 but haven't flown commercial in a while, what is so different than if you were furloughed for several years and didn't fly? I know furloughed pilots that returned after 5 yrs of no flying, their training dept said, don't worry well get you current again.
I think this is coming from the HR types. Like having flown it the last month makes you a better pilot.

When it comes to regency, UAL will not currently invite anyone with less than 100 hrs in the last 12 months. So if you can get over that threshold, you might have a shot there. If you don't have an ATP already, getting a 737 type rating (classic) might be a good investment for a few grand above what you'd pay for an ATP. UAL does sim interviews in a -300 sim and the type is actually a plus for your app (not to mention it is a plus at SWA, but no longer required). Otherwise, getting a Bus or NG is type several grand more expensive than a Classic and doesn't really add anything.
Like it has already been said, get your apps out soon and hope for the best. In the meantime, pick a couple of regionals that work for you and get fully current by getting a job at one. Time is on your side either way.
