Well, junior guys aren't losing a pension (they have a DC plan from Day 1--in their own names), they aren't affected by wage reductions (they haven't been around long enough--it only gets better from here), and health care costs may not be as bad as you think. We'll see how your job security looks in 8-10 years--unmanned aircraft are all the rage. People will never fly on an airplane without human pilots. The same cannot be said about their mail-order rubber dog sh*t. Who knows, some 17-year-old Xbox champion may be gunning for your job before you know it.
I guess my point is: You should enjoy being on top while you can.
As for me, I accept a slightly lighter W-2 in exchange for being able to enjoy my time off (not in a zombie state) and have a few more years to live.
To each his/her own.
p.s. You may want to start getting proficient on the Xbox...
”…I guess my point is: You should enjoy being on top while you can…”
Really? I guess our point is why don't you enjoy yours instead of belittling others?
We might be flying "mail order rubber dog sh*it” as you so eloquently put it but frankly looking at some of your airplanes I've recently flown it looks almost as if that's what you’ve been flying too.
As far as unmanned aircraft - you are right that is coming but it'll happen long after you've been furloughed.
So yeah, to each his or her own and while you are at it – start practicing those Wii approaches, that might extend your non-zombie life span!
Apologize to all fine DAL folks – his/her condescending post irked me off…

I'm sorry about my confusion here, I have a friend over there and a while back she said she went on a cargo only trip so I assumed they (you?) did both... As far as jumpseating - didn't know I had misconceptions in that regard since I jump regularly (domestically and internationally), what am I missing?
No more freight, unfortunately, as I would be all over it. You have no need to apologize, it's a pretty common misconception which is probably helped along by our MX bases at the cargo areas of ATL and BWI.

It's not Fedex but rather TSA that prevents them from allowing international jumspeats, they say CASS is for domestic purposes only. I don't know why Kalitta, Omni, etc can do it awhile we can't?...
You can only CASS on Omni between KLAS and PHNL. Those are the only two stations equipped for it. Omni isn't doing anything that other carriers cannot do. I figure you might have been referring to things being more "relaxed", regarding the jumpseat at some freight carriers.

Oh, I see now. My 'confusion' on that thread was why TSA would allow Kalitta, Atlas, and other airlines to take international jumpseaters but won't allow UPS and Fedex to do the same? Still don't know the answer.

Hey Winston,
My wife bought me the XBOX 360 Elite for our anniversary (very cool un-wifey Wife), and I love putting the smack down on those 17 year-old beeotches on HALO 2 and HALO 3 every day. I'm usually at least half way up the list and they hate getting spanked by a Dad in his 40's, especially when they hear the baby in my lap.
Any other gamers out there?
OK, sorry for the thread hijack... Back to the discussion at hand.

The difference between pax and cargo hauling? It's all about your own perception - not too long ago a friend who flies small turboprops hauling checks reminded me that Fedex and UPS pilots aren’t real freight dogs but rather airline pilots who happen to be flying boxes; I guess I do see his point.
As a former single engine piston check hauler, tell you friend that not a freight dog, he's just a regional pilot who happens to fly paper... geez, he probably has radar and a copilot and everything, or does he fly a custom designed cargo cessna, which omits the copilot?

I consider myself a freightdog that wears a uniform. I guess I don't see his point. The main difference between his and my job is that after flying the stuff there, he has to unload it himself.

Real freightdogs:
When told that there are no hotel rooms since their company is too cheap to pay for more than one day (check in time is 3PM but it's 6AM) head over to the couch in the lobby and go to sleep.
Get chased out of commuter airline terminals like vagrants at 6 AM by airport police because they had nowhere else to sleep during the sorts at places like HUF.
Drain pony kegs (provided by the fleabag hotel) while eating cheese steaks and stromboli delivered at 6AM and then get lap dances by the delivery gal who just got off at the strip club three hours earlier who works two (and sometimes three) jobs .
Constantly have to stand at the door of UAL cockpits waiting for jumpseats while the captain checks the scab list because "only losers or scabs fly for companies like yours".
Have late shows for work because they can't get out of the Motel 6 hotel room because there's a shoot out in the parking lot.
Hitch hike to the layover hotel because the hotel van got car jacked on the way to picking you up, and cabs refuse to come "over there".
