Lightbulb UPS Rumor: DC-8s to the boneyard after Bid 9-02

Second hand information (rumor):

Spoke with a Manager "buddy" of mine the other day who is on the 8. He
told me he was just informed all the 8's would be gone after the bid
09-02. Displacement bid out shortly and there will be a buyout offered
to relieve the overmanning. The company is doing everything possible
to avoid any furloughs.

Discuss....

Roberto how does this affect our "experienced" pilots that haven't upgraded yet?

Flame on.

Three aircraft fleets gone in 3 years...Talk about alot of shuffling! Busy times at the training centers. They don't want to furlough because it would cause tremendous upheaval in Anchorage especially. Who would the buyout be targeting? Over 60 F/Es?

Why is the company having to offer buyouts? For the past five years, everytime a pilot celebrated his/her 60th birthday, the company should have told them "Congratulations on a successful career. We have no vacancies for you so enjoy retirement. Goodbye."

I hope after the displacement bid, anyone leftover without a place to go is just stuffed into the most junior seat like all of the ROPES for the last five (probably ten) years.

Looking forward to December 13, 2012.

I was slammed by everybody for posting this same rumor about a month ago after I heard it from the head of aircraft engineering. All DC-8's to the desert by April 1st 2009. Believed it then, still believe it now..

After the DHL news came out a few months ago they talked about bringing DC8's from the desert. Not putting them in. Either the deal is not going to go through or the amount of DHL "business" isnt enough to warrant flying them.

No matter how much volume has been reduced I can't see UPS parking 25 DC8's in three months maybe slowly as their heavy checks are due. UPS is only projected to get (2) 767's and (1) 747-400's maybe (3). A net reduction of 20-22 airframes in 3 months? That would create a huge training log even if UPS furloughs. Hopefully??!

Rumor I heard is that they will be overstaffed by 300-400 pilots. But no furloughs planned as of yet.
