Hate to crossjack the thread, but SWAPA has been quietly telling their pilots (17 and 22 Oct) that they are 250 overmanned this year, and will be 400 overmanned Jan 2011 after the RNP training is complete.

The tone and tenor of the comm reminded me a lot of the winter 2008 comm we started getting at FDX, and I suspect the comm from UPS and the IPA about the same time. The cutbacks on capacity have forced SWA to "buy up" a few lines this Jan/Feb, but they claim the spring schedule will fix that. However, if things don't change there, and the winter of 2011 looms with no new growth, then those guys will be facing some of the music we've faced in the freight business the last two years.

Not bashing anyone--just pointing out the test for SWA will be next year. That will be the time to praise their management for doing the right thing, or to observe SWA become "just another airline job..." if they do the previously unthinkable and furlough.

Thank goodness that looming pilot shortage was averted with the age 60 rule change.

Good times.

Uh, I don't think they really care.

Amen to that.

Nice to see you back despite your grief.

If bashing the age rule is good therapy sign me up too...

For what its worth...I couldn't wait to get back into a jet after my dad passed away. It seemed one of the few places I could control what was going on around me, and my dad was always unbelievably proud of me being a fighter pilot... I hope you enjoy going back to work as much as I did when the time is right for you.

They dont have to actually do it. Just to say that dirty word is enough to turn me off.

It's worth alot. It's amazing how just reading everyone's posts helps.

I am taking a few months off because I am an only child and I need to take care of ALOT of things but I am really looking forward to going back to work. I figure my mom can fly with me anytime now and there is always a jumpseat available for her. My mom was always my biggest fan when it came to becoming a pilot and I am glad she got to see me get to where I am.

They don't care, it was started as a bottom rung airline and didn't bother them then. Doubt it would in the future. Its the profits.

Does SWA have a cost of living adjustment? Inflation has averaged about 3% over the last 5 years. If not, 2% per year doesn't even break even. I guess some is better than none in this economy.

This year no inflation, so far. Moving forward is an accomplishment in itself for any pilot contract.
