The alternative could be hire some pilots for peak, furlough them at the end of the peak, and recall them next year for peak. Then UPS would have to buy some airplanes that would fly during peak, and do nothing for 10 months a year. Where would that money come from? Our paychecks?
It make financial sense for the company to outsource extra flights during peak. If UPS could sustain that business year round, then it would be better to do that flying in house. But since it's not, it's better to outsource it. IT is real easy to sit here and say "that is costing us jobs." But sometimes you have to look at the alternative.
