Default UPS wet lease

Not saying that we aren't guilty of the same, but I couldn't help notice 6 non-brown 747's on the SDF ramp yesterday. How does the company justify the need for that much outside lift and still keep 109 pilots on furlough?

They don't have to justify anything to anybody. If you don't believe that just ask them.
They'll tell you...LOL

I'm going to take a guess...

Article 1: D 1(c) 1, page 7 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement-Scope Section/ Domestic Subcontracting.

Just a guess.

They have to park those Southern Air 747's somewhere.

It's more efficient to subcontract out some flying during the busiest time of the year, rather than do this flying in house and have those aircraft and crews sit empty and not fly 10 months of the year.

It's more efficient to subcontract all the flying out with that attitude. Why have a contract?

Our contract allows some subcontracting.

Never mind. Like I said it is more EFFICIENT to subcontract it all... Those 109 should have their jobs. Just the camels nose and tent thing

FX allows it too. Of course they have no pilots on furlough but they did have that 4a2b fiasco. But they have always subcontracted during peak in the 5 years I have been here at least they needed the extra lift.

The alternative could be hire some pilots for peak, furlough them at the end of the peak, and recall them next year for peak. Then UPS would have to buy some airplanes that would fly during peak, and do nothing for 10 months a year. Where would that money come from? Our paychecks?

It make financial sense for the company to outsource extra flights during peak. If UPS could sustain that business year round, then it would be better to do that flying in house. But since it's not, it's better to outsource it. IT is real easy to sit here and say "that is costing us jobs." But sometimes you have to look at the alternative.
