Default Maintenance questions, Field Stations

Why is Memphis sending out aircraft to the field stations for repairs, instead of making those repairs in Memphis ?
Has the corporation instituted a type of "productivity enhancer program" for these field stations by sending out all this deferred work ? Field stations have been doing engine changes, windshield changes, airframe repairs, etc. on a scheduled basis from Memphis ............... ???

Maybe they just want to get their monies worth out of the out-station mechanics, by having them doing A&P work during their shift, instead of just sitting in their hut watching Days of Our Lives.

System form. If you work here, you know where the planes actually sit.

Pretty clear to me when I read the ARD . . . . Standard hub-turn MX response to any inbound write-up: "no time to troubleshoot/work the problem". Shirley, you knew that the real purpose of the MEL is to get planes to the outstations for repair

I remember being told certain stations kind of "specialize" in specific mx areas and it ends up being more efficient to use those out stations, their personnel and the downtime the aircraft spends there to fix those specific mx items. ATL is the MD-11/10 APU base, for example. Someone who flies there often might be able to confirm that many of their aircraft have an APU deferred on their way in.

Kind of makes sense to me since there is probably a higher percentage of the day spent on the ground at other stations than MEM. Plus, as the same people repair the same systems on a regular basis, you'd think they might get more efficient than someone who sees it less.

Thanks for that, but we don't have huts or Days of our Lives over here

Yes, of course you're right. It was a figure of speech. I should have said Maintenance Facility and Sports Channel.

How long have you been working here? This has been "normal ops for the 15 years I've been here.

As everyone else has said - certain ramps specialize in types of maintenance performed.

MEM Mechanics are not allowed to start fixing anything that can be differed. They might find something that may "down" the aircraft!
