Default Cargo Slump And The 747-8

There is a cargo slump?? Certainly not evident at NRT yesterday where there seemed to be more FedEx planes than passenger ones!

Cargo slump threatens more pain for Boeing 747-8 | Reuters

Maybe if FedEx was buying 747-8s that would be good for the 747-8.

ANA's cargo numbers are way high, up to the point that they have been using passenger 777's on freighter flights (just using the lower deck) because they don't have enough freighters to cover the demand, I don't know what these people are talking about

I think the operators that ordered the -800 are getting cold feet given the cost and the extremely small difference in payload (4-6 more pallets) vs the -400. The -800 is suppose to burn 16% less fuel. I don't see an advantage for the -800 unless you pay cash for it.

Boeing dropped the last two digits. So it is now only the B747-8. The -8 does have a greater range with a full load verses the -400.

With the -400's being harder to find, the -8 might be attractive considering that they have a common type with the -400.

There's a great article in the 10/31 issue of Time about the China bubble economy.... Very relevant to this discussion.
