Default Fdx retirement timing

The way I read the contract, if I am scheduled to be operating a multi-day trip on the day that I have told the company that I will be retiring, I will be removed from the trip and be NQN (non-qualified, no pay) as of the retirement date. Will I be placed in substitution status for the time I am still qualified? That is the way I read it. I would like to hear from someone who has retired in this circumstance as to how the company actually handles this.
Also, what happens if, after someone else blocks out on the trip, I decide to postpone my retirement to some date a month later? And what happens to trips on my schedule after my original trip.

Why not wait to set your retirement date till AFTER the monthly bids come out? Your first check may be delayed a few weeks but you will still get all pay. Even if you tell the co the day before retiring its a six week delay. If you cannot handle that then a little belt tightening might be in order. I DO want to know the answer to your question, Corkscrew. It would be nice if any recent retirees would jump in.

Better yet, wait until after the bid, call in sick the day of the trip to get paid for it, then retire.

I retired last year and was sick up to my retirement date. Try to retire on the first day of the next calendar month, don't worry about the bid month. It is very beneficial.

You will get paid for the month you retired on plus receive your final check a few days later....talk to Ann or Janice Gentry. You DEFINATELY WANT TO TALK TO THEM.

But you have to work that bid month prior. I'm not sure what the benefit is, if you just get paid for what you work.

The way I read it was that he should retire on the first day of the month with the trip in question. Then he gets paid for the entire month without working any of it.

Question: If one turns 65 early in the calendar year --- say Jan, Feb or March --- what's the optimal time to retire?

Before Dec 31?

Or wait until one's birthday?

I can understand why some guys would wait until the end if they thought a new contract which increased the A fund cap was imminent

But now that those hopes have been dashed, I assume there is little financial motivation for them to fly thru/past peak

Albie brought this up in another thread after the most recent announcement by PC that we're headed to the NMB.

Just wondering how the math works out assuming the increase in the A fund cap is no longer imminent

???

Retirement experts please chime in

There are a lot of variables that come in to play when picking a retirement date. Everyone's situation is different so definitely get the ALPA experts involved. Here are a few things to consider. If you can, work past the 15th of October. That you will give you 100 percent of the following years vacation accrual. Pick a date that will make sure you get the vacation buy back check in the year you have maxed out FICA, otherwise you will have money withheld from the check. If you don't have 25 years in make sure you work long enough to get that last good year. I retired two years ago on 20 September and with vacation accrual and unused vacation, it gave me another two percent. These are just some of the highlights. Again, get the ALPA folks involved. They are great and will keep you out of trouble.
