Just did this. We took the Metro into the city. The hotel has a Metro pass. We went to an Indian place that was pretty good, its called Ashoka and we went to a Turkish place,

Here's the link.

Sultan, Guangzhou - Restaurant Reviews, Phone Number & Photos - TripAdvisor

I did the standby and we had time to go in to the city. Metro is easy. The hotel has a map of the Metro. The Metro cards can run out so make sure you have 5 or 10 RMB on hand since the Metro ticket machines don't take anything other than those two bills.

Look up stuff on Urbanspoon, that how I found these two places. These places are near the Garden hotel.

Best advice, get out of the hotel and ride the subway, somewhere, anywhere. If you are on the MD11, they seem to use you going to ICN and back so make sure you are rested for the stndby periods. We got used the first night and it was a Wed, rumor is the Sunday flights get used, not true for us. We got sent to ICN and were supposed to stay in ICN for 12hrs, they had us downtown, we asked to stay at the airport and it was changed.

Several restaurants at the airport, from interesting to scary. Be adventurous...and hitting the subway to town is a good choice also.

1920 Pub near the river (1920cn.com) is a three minute walk from the Haizhu Square metro stop (exit D).

Walk into the terminal, down the escalator one level and go right. At the end of the hall on the left there's a red/white sign. Has a picture of a guy in a white suit, white hair, goatee, bow tie, rank - Colonel. I think their specialty is chicken.

I recommend going to the front desk immediately and turning in your belt, shoelaces, and any sharp objects you may have in your room . . .

I used to think that too but there really is a lot to do in Guangzhou if you make the effort to get out.

So whats worse, getting paid to sit on your butt in a hotel or flying and being tired. I'm not a fan of Guangzhou but I had a pretty good time on my last trip. FO and I got out and saw some stuff. I think the key is to get out of the hotel and go somewhere. Just riding the Metro into town for dinner burned up at least 3hrs.

Party on Wayne, Party on Garth.
