fltplan.com question
I'm a new user to fltplan.com and I have a question with how you can set up your flight plans:
It looks like when you file (say from NY to FL) you only get the "turns" in the airways versus all of the fixes. Is there any way to change that setting?
The other day we were given direct to an intersection that wasn't listed on our flight plan, so we had to hunt down the fix on the chart. Yes, I always check my route on the charts when my fltplan.com paperwork is printed out... but I didn't know if there were printing options.
And yes, I'm another pilot complaining about something free! It's a great product, I'm just new to it. Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks.

It's an excellent question but I believe the answer is no. FltPlan.com's philosophy (especially as of late) trends towards keeping the nav logs as simple as possible. That's why they recently introduced the option of printing your nav log without the winds aloft matrix so you can keep everything on one page if you desire. While I understand and appreciate the situation you encountered, I think most of us would agree a nav log with every fix listed would be too cluttered.
With that said, try emailing [email protected] with your comments. Every time I have written them, someone has responded personally within the day. Their service is great and they do seem very open and responsive to user suggestions. Good luck.

I guess I dont understand what you are saying. Lets say I go from KTEB to KGRB, the route is COATE J36 FNT J106 GRB. So if you dont have an FMS you have to get the chart out and load every fix in your GPS along J36 and J106.
What I did when I flew with a KLN 90 in the citation is go in the plane 15 min before the trip and write down all the fixes on a piece of paper so I had them to load quickly after we were up and running. The only time I had to go back to the chart is if I got a re-route from ATC.

Yes, i agree with pre-loading the fixes. Some FMS and GPS systems know the Victor Airways and Jet Routes, but our Garmin does not. I our case my filed flight plan was: COATE J36 FNT
Note the jet route i used --> J36
In FLTPLAN.com you press NavLog and the next page shows your plan, winds aloft, fuel estimate, time estimate, etc.
Just below that it shows all the FIXES on your planned route... even the jet route J36 in my example.
So my plan: COATE J36 FNT
has fixes shown as:
COATE
LHY
MINEO
DKK
JLGON
FNT
From here it is easy to enter these into the GPS or FMS, and quickly double-check on the IFR chart.

This is what fltplan.com spits out:
ALB
SAX
BWZ
LRP
This is the full routing:
ALB
ACOVE
WEETS
FLOSI
SAX
BWZ
PARKE
KAYNE
HOUTN
LRP
To my knowledge, there is no way to get a "long printout".

FoSheezy,
No. FltPlan.com does NOT give you every fix along J36. They only give you the fixes along your route of flight where there is a course change or changeover. For instance, COATE LHY J36 FNT leaves out a lot of fixes along J36 - just between LHY and DKK there is also DGRAF, REBBL, and WAAKE. These do not appear on the nav log.
If you read the original poster's post carefully, he was asking if there was a way for them to display every fix along the entire airway even if there is no change in course. Unfortunately, for long trips this will lead to navlogs that are very cluttered. The best suggestion is to do what other posters have suggested and just consult the map and write them down on a piece of scrap paper before programming them in the GPS.

I'd say the easiest solution in a situation like this is to simply ask the controller to spell the intersection, get going towards it, and then look at the map to reconfirm your course after the new direct to...

Thank you for everyone's input. I spoke to fltplan.com's technical support; they are currently concentrating on keeping the navlog on a single page (hence only the 'turns' and VOR's are listed). There are no options to have all of the fixes displayed.
The other flight planning software we use is ARINC Direct, which lists every fix along the airway. These flight plans are also loaded via an FMS which auto loads all of the intersections on the selected airway.
Thank you for all of your insight!

I use a dual Garmin 530/430 setup in a Citation. 30 minutes before planned departure to get the clearance. If the clearance is the same as what you filed in fltplan.com its easy, you can just add fixes into the flightplan as listed on the navlog. If not, get our your chart.
It does not give you every fix along the route, but the important (turn) fixes. If I want to add more fixes, I do so in flight as needed such as flying to Bermuda there are compulsory reporting points that won't show up on your fltplan.com navlog.
If you are doing a route often, be sure you save it.
