Default FS enacts longevity contract for instructors

New corporate policy requires instructors to sign a two year longevity agreement in exchange for the type rating. Being tort law the individual state's laws will come into play (since FS has multiple locations); however, in a certain big oil right to work state there's case law upholding this type of agreement. To me, two years is a little much. Not everyone has a take the type and run attitude. Thoughts?

One of two things will happen, they'll continue to get qualified applicants for instructor positions, or they wont. I would bet on the former.

it is no secret that many guys seek employment at FSI for that reason and that alone...they figure they collect the type, and start networking with clients as soon as they can.

I think FSI is particularly weary of commuter-airline guys... they've had quite a few apply lately, thus this rule.

If I was unemployed or flying an ERJ for a low tier regional airline, I'll do 2 years for a good corporate-jet type, hell yeah I would

Well technically it's three - because the timeline starts after full instructor qualification. Which can take up to a year depending on program. Even applies to instructors switching aircraft which I think is pretty bogus if you've been there for a number of years.

Former FSI SAV G450/550 guy here. I loved the place, but the money was pretty poor for the work (salary, no overtime, slow advancement in salary and very little opportunity to work into a higher paid position within FSI).

On day one of indoc the assistant manager welcomed us with the right to work state talk, telling us we were subject to being let go at any time, and free to resign as well as we saw fit. Soured me pretty quickly to their top down style and I left after finding a startup airline gig starting at a 60% raise over FSI pay. So, FSI paid me to get a GV type I will never use. At the time I felt bad about being a type and run guy, but then when the economy tanked I found out they let go quite a lot of instructors which I surely would have been one of, and by then not current on anything and unemployable to an airline or a corporation. While it was a big gamble to go with a startup airline, I am now making over twice my old FSI pay working 12 to 14 days a month, so it worked well in my situation.

So, what is FSI going to give an instructor for this 2 year training bond? More $$? 2 years of full employment as an instructor to "pay off" the bond? Seems pretty one sided to me.

I will say the people in SAV were great to work with, the facility top notch, and the desire to provide quality instruction present in everyone I met. It was just a slave ship in comparison to what is available out in the real flying world. I hope it works for anyone getting ready to sign a training bond.
