Many years ahead of you guys, by now, and I'm really happy you're interviewing. Just a couple of observations on themes that recur through the ages:
1) The suit/tie issue: I think Delta is looking simply for people that are willing to put in the effort, and meet all the requirements. Other assets on their list are that you should be personable, and present a professional image. They're going to put a uniform on you, to make sure you look the way the want you to look when you're interacting with the public. So when you put those together, you simply have to conclude that your dress code is all about conformity and professionalism. You're NOT trying to distinguish yourself on the basis of an outfit. This isn't America's Next Top Model. I doubt anyone on an interview board has ever been blown away by an outfit. Distinguish yourself with a great personality, not your clothes. It's Ok if you look like everyone else, because it says you bothered to figure out what everyone might look like.
2) The ticket/checkride issue. Also pretty simple. Delta really, really hates liars. They'll work with you on almost anything but lying, cheating, or stealing. I wouldn't overthink the process, or try to game the system by hiding something negative, because those stories often end in tears. On the other hand, I know plenty of guys that have a story about a negative that was discussed, barely discussed, or not discussed at all, that they spend days sweating. I think all of us have something negative here or there, but the most negative thing of all, is to be a liar. I also think you'll be far more relaxed at your interview explaining a negative, and feeling the relief when you realize they don't really care (because they see the good candidate in front of them), as opposed to trying to conceal something.
Good luck to you guys!

Whenever I have to play dress-up I'd been wearing a pair of burgandy lawyer shoes I bought for internship interviews back in 1991. some web page said I shouldn't wear burgandy for a real job interview so I got some black ones (fortunately said web page said burgandy are ok with an olive suit, to think i might have been making fashion errors all these years, oh the horror...)
Now you know why I am a pilot.
This was about a week after I asked the lunch room; "who picked all this ugly a** seafoam green, it's even in our jet?" Our CEO let me know it was his wife's favorite color ... .
