My husband and I are going over there again in a couple weeks. Does anyone have a recommendation for a smaller, non-chain, intimate hotel near Union Square? Cheap? Close to sights? Near a BART station?

The last time we were there, we stayed very near the Tenderloin District. We'd rather not do that this time around.

If you plan on renting a car, try the Avalon Motel in San Mateo off 101. Its in a relatively okay area and i believe it should be cheap enough.

If you plan on taking BART, try looking away from SFO, aka Millbrae, Daly City or try some place in the east bay.

You should try either the Union Square Hotel or The Handerly Hotel. Both are reasonably priced and their both right off of the trolly line and close to tons of sights, shopping and dining.
