"We are excited about launching service between New York and Munich, the largest German city not currently served by Continental and a hub for our new partner Lufthansa," said Jim Compton, the airline's executive vice president of marketing. "As well as extending Continental service to a new market in Germany, this hub-to-hub link will provide additional travel options and opportunities for our customers on both sides of the Atlantic."

Flight CO106 will depart Newark Liberty daily at 5:25 p.m. and arrive in Munich at 7:50 a.m. the next day. The return flight, CO107, will depart Munich's Franz Josef Strauss International Airport daily at 9:20 a.m. and arrive at Newark Liberty at 12:35 p.m. the same day. The schedule of the Continental service complements that of Lufthansa's existing daily New York/Newark-Munich service, which departs Newark Liberty about three hours later and Munich about six hours later.

The Continental flights will be operated by Boeing 767-200ER aircraft, seating 25 passengers in BusinessFirst and 149 passengers in economy class.

The new flight has been timed to provide convenient connections at Munich, where Star Alliance partner flights provide service to over 95 destinations in Western Europe, Eastern Europe and the Middle East, and at New York/Newark with an extensive network of Continental flights to more than 100 destinations throughout the U.S., Canada and Latin America. Continental operates the largest hub in the New York City metropolitan area at Newark Liberty International Airport.

Munich, the capital of Bavaria and the economic centre of southern Germany, is the country's third largest city after Berlin and Hamburg, with a population of 1.3 million in the city and 5 million in the Munich Metropolitan Region. Famed for its historic and modern architecture and annual Oktoberfest beer celebration, Munich boasts a wealth of cultural attractions and institutions. Among the many world-renowned companies whose headquarters are in the city are Siemens AG (electronics), BMW (cars), MAN AG (trucks, engineering), Allianz (insurance) and Munich Re (re-insurance). Lufthansa operates a hub at Munich's Franz Josef Strauss International Airport, which is the second-largest airport in Germany after Frankfurt.

The new flights will offer Continental's award-winning BusinessFirst service. BusinessFirst features an extensive gourmet menu served with premium wines and champagnes created by Continental's Congress of Chefs and Sommeliers. International concierge service provides individualized pre- and post-flight services for BusinessFirst customers at 35 airports around the world. Customers traveling in BusinessFirst may also access any of Continental's 25 Presidents Clubs and more than 800 affiliated lounges worldwide.

Continental currently offers nonstop service between New York/Newark and Frankfurt, Berlin and Hamburg. In addition, the airline launched nonstop service from Houston to Frankfurt on Nov. 1, 2009. Munich will be the 30th destination in Continental's trans-Atlantic route network.

Tuesday November 17, 2009

Finnair pilots represented by the Finnish Air Line Pilots' Assn. will strike for a second consecutive day today, forcing the airline to cancel its entire program of more than 200 scheduled flights.

AY said leisure flights operated by management pilots will continue "with the help of leasing arrangements" and that "individual changes" to the schedule "are possible." The strike, which also affected Finnair's Sunday schedule, will cost the airline €2-€5 million per day, according to various press reports.

Pilots rejected a settlement proposal last Friday, leaving Finnair "totally stunned," it said. Senior VP-Human Resources Anssi Komulainen said the airline would have accepted any of the three mediator proposals presented over the past 18 months. "Now we are forced to come up with totally new solutions in order to secure the future of the company," he said.

The union said, "The proposal by the state mediator allowed unlimited use of outside workforce, and did not offer pilots any work security. We cannot sign such a proposal."

Does this make anyone else really nervous? Though this doesn't seem to allow it, its yet another step in a scary direction. I'm not looking forward to the day where Air China d.b.a United Airlines (for example) is flying all the international flights out of this country, or you get on a flight from LAS to DFW operated by Ethiopian Airlines d.b.a "Air United States".

We need to make sure our scope is ONE HUNDRED PERCENT ROCK SOLID on issues like this before they become a serious problem and really need to take competition from foreign airlines on our turf seriously. We all know things like this are a very slippery slope and this could make the explosion of RJs look like nothing...

Hey guys I was just wondering in general what you all think about these predictions and if they are likely down the road.

1. The majors will bring all their jet flying back in house. The regionals will go back to primarily all props and bigger props like the Q400. The RJs will be phased out or brought up to mainline. All the RJ pilots will celebrate because they are at a "major" with a 20k pay raise while the major captains take a 50-70k cut in pay.

2. Or they will stay with the fuel inefficient jets because they make a profit due to the fact the pilots dont cost a lot with their low pay. This will cause a massive shrinking of the major airlines. Until Boeings/Airbuses become international and major cargo planes only. And "regionals" will do all the flying within the states, with the possiblity of regional pay going up 20k while the high time major captain pay will come down 75k.

3. In ten years major Captains will max out at 150,000 a year due to the high volume of pilots and constant undercutting of airline to airline and pilot to pilot.

I am just wondering what all you guys think the future will look like in ten years. I hear a lot of talk about a shortage...but I dont think their will be a shortage of pilots...just normal attrition after years of cutbacks and cost reductions.

"...Ed Wytkind, president of the AFL-CIO's transportation trades department, said he doesn't expect the Obama administration to attempt a return to the kind of regulation that existed before 1978 where the government set fares and routes. But he said he'd like the government to tighten requirements for new, low-cost airlines seeking to enter the marketplace.

A parade of low-cost carriers have at times driven air fares below cost, Wytkind said. That causes economic chaos for mainline carriers until finally the new entrants go bankrupt [or their costs mature (my comment)] in a process that hurts the entire industry, he said..."

One simple way to begin stabilizing the industry is to quit issuing 121 certificates for the next decade. If we have a glut of seats on the market, why add to them.
