This is not about aviation, but it's a wonderful story about human beings that I feel compelled to share.

747 intercept in SEA yesterday?

Just wondering if anyone else saw the 747 with the fighter escort last night around 8:00pm. I was near McChord and looked up to see a 747 with what appeared to be an F-16 in close trail. Anyone else see this?

This morning, I pulled aside the shower curtain and found the biggest, ugliest, grossest spider in the tub. The thing was as big around as a saucer. It was so big that it wouldn't flush down the drain.

My husband came home and had to pick up the drowned arachnid and threw it into the toilet bowl.

I know I want to lose 7 pounds more before Thanksgiving, but losing my appetite over The Big One is not the way to do it.

Gulfstream Aerospace�s new G650 reached Mach 0.995 in flutter tests, a feat that prompts the company to dub its top-of-the-line airplane the world�s fastest civil aircraft. The speed was attained as part of the G650�s certification flight test program. Gulfstream experimental test pilots Tom Horne and Gary Freeman, along with flight test engineer Bill Osborne, pitched the airplane�s nose down 16 to 18 degrees below the horizon to hit the target speed. The maneuver was designed to test the airplane�s natural flutter resistance when the wings, tail, and control surfaces were subjected to vibrations from onboard flutter exciters. The vibration frequencies exerted on the airplane ranged from two hertz (cycles per second) to 58 hertz, or about as fast as a fluorescent light flickers.
The airplane performed as expected. Horne said, �The airplane is very predictable. It�s very easy to control and get precise control at those speeds. The airplane response has matched the expectations of our engineers, and we�ve been able to easily fly the test conditions and march through the test plan.�
The four airplanes participating in the G650 flight test program�which began on Nov. 25, 2009�have completed more than 170 flights and 575 flight-test hours.

King Incident The Second Case Of Mistaken Identity

John and Martha King's brush with the authorities in Santa Barbara on Saturday is apparently the second time this airplane has been detained and its pilot questioned because it shares an N-number with a Cessna 150 stolen eight years ago. According to aviation blogger Max Trescott, former Cessna employee Jim Pitman picked up the factory-fresh Skyhawk in Independence and flew it to Wichita for meetings. On landing he was met by Wichita police who quickly ironed out the mixup and sent him on his way. Why that didn't trigger an update to the databases that were consulted to create the situation in Santa Barbara is a question sure to come up as aviation group leaders, including AOPA President Craig Fuller, demand answers from authorities over the treatment of the Kings. As we reported earlier, aviation's most prominent husband and wife team is calling on government agencies to keep their databases up to date and warning pilots and aircraft owners they could be next to be surrounded by heavily armed police, handcuffed and detained because of a bit of miscommunication.

The Kings spent about 30 scary minutes in the custody of Santa Barbara, Calif., police at the Santa Barbara Airport. As in the incident in Wichita, authorities thought their leased Cessna 172 was a Cessna 150 that had been stolen eight years previously in Texas. The 172, which is owned by Cessna Aircraft, was assigned the N-number (50545) of the stolen 150 in 2009, years after the FAA had cancelled that registration on the 150. Apparently no one told the El Paso Intelligence Center, an arm of the Drug Enforcement Agency, and other government departments that keeps tabs on, among other things, flights of stolen aircraft. A quick check of the FAA database would have revealed the current registration and shown the cancelled one. That didn't happen because when the Kings filed IFR for their flight from San Diego to meet friends in Santa Barbara, the local police were alerted to intercept the aircraft when it landed. As Martha King told us in the accompanying podcast, what followed was, in her opinion, unnecessarily dangerous and uncomfortable.

King says they were approached by police prepared for the worst, with guns drawn and others taking cover behind the doors of the four police cars that responded. Although anyone who has met the Kings would describe them as anything but threatening in appearance and demeanor, the police took no chances and maintained their aggressive stance through the ordeal. "I would have thought at that point when they got us out it would have ratcheted down quite a bit because I don't think we exactly look like your typical airplane thief," she said. The Kings were not hurt and the airplane was not damaged. The police did not apologize but did justify their actions by saying it was a report that had to be checked out, King said. The Kings said they went public with their experience in hopes that law enforcement agencies will double-check stolen aircraft reports and to warn pilots that there's a chance their N-number could come up under similar circumstances.

Uniform Pants

I launched another thread asking for any tips on finding pilot uniform pants. M & H, where my airline is referring us to, is too expensive. Wondering if anybody had a site or store that had pilot uniform pants in the $20-$30 dollar range, instead of the $53 bucks advertised where I found them.
The joke I make, is that the pants I�m wearing now are so thread-bare that if I stood in front of a sunset you could see the profile of my junk. So yea, I need some new pants and looking for where you guys are shopping for �em.

Financing to Start a Radio Station

Conducting the due diligence to start an AM radio station with repeater carriers to ensure the signal is nationwide up to the flight levels. It would be called KPLT, 1380AM playing new, alt rock on the weekends, and holidays, classic rock Tuesday thru Thursday, Jazz and some blues in the evenings, maybe do a market test to see what the midnight cowboy-cargo haulers want, intermixed with a talk radio and a news hour or two in the morning and afternoon. The advertisements would be for truck dealerships, divorce, real estate and bankruptcy attorneys, Rogain, Propecia, and Viagra and an assortment of small arms dealers.

Crew discount on Norfolk hotels?
