Greetings, and this is my first post here. I am currently interested in applying for Cathay's cadet pilot program which has recently been opened up to all nationalities. However, when I was going through the online application several questions arose:

1) When asked if you are affiliated or a member of any aviation-related organization (I'm thinking AOPA, Angel Flight, CAP or some-such), does it really help to actually be a member? Are there certain organizations that they actually look down upon for political reasons, ie AOPA supports GA and airlines hate GA or something?

2) The application says no flight experience is needed, but the form has a place to list any that you have. Will any flight experience you have make any appreciable difference? Or, could it in fact hurt you because they want zero or nearly-zero time people who haven't picked up "bad habits?" Also, does where you earned your ratings have an affect and what if you did so with an independent CFI or flight school that has since closed down?

3) For the personal statement, are they looking for anything in particular or is there anything to emphasize? Also, how long should it be, ie one paragraph to make your point or a 3-page autobiography about your love of aviation starting at 4 years old..?

Thank you very much for any help you can offer.:)

Philippine Airlines 777-300ER (Boeing photo)

Boeing on Wednesday delivered a 777-300ER to U.S.-based leasing company GE Capital Aviation Services and its customer, Philippine Airlines.
The jet is the first 777 to join PAL's fleet and is one of two leased 777-300ERs the airline will use for international routes. The carrier also has four more 777-300ERs on order directly from Boeing.

With the help of AmeriCares, Humanitarian International Services Group and Kids Against Hunger, Boeing and Philippine Airlines loaded nearly 18,000 pounds of medical supplies and packaged meals into the cargo hold of the 777-300ER to bring relief to residents devastated by the massive floods from Typhoon Ketsana.

"The airlift of relief goods is inherent to our mandate as the Philippines flag carrier," Philippine Airlines President Jaime Bautista said in a news release. "Earlier, we conducted a similar airlift of relief from local donors. I am sure these donations will go a long way in alleviating the plight of the victims and help in rebuilding their lives."

MADRID (AP) -- Iberia and British Airways have approved an agreement establishing the basis for a merger, the Spanish carrier said late Thursday.

Iberia called it a "binding agreement" aimed at creating one of the world's largest airline groups, with a fleet of 419 aircraft flying to 205 destinations.

The company would take the form of new holding company that owns the two current carriers. Iberia would own 45 percent of the new company, and British Airways 55 percent, Iberia said.

The deal is expected to be signed in the first quarter of 2010 and be approved by shareholders by the end of that year, the Spanish carrier said. The deal would need regulatory and shareholder approval.

Iberia also would be able to pull out of the agreement if any final deal between British Airways and the administrators of its deficit-ridden pension fund is not satisfactory for Iberia. This has been a stumbling point in merger talks that began in July 2008.

The merged company's financial headquarters would be in London, and the chairman would be Antonio Vazquez, who currently is chairman at Iberia. The CEO would be Willie Walsh, now the chief executive officer of British Airways.

The merger could yield synergies of euro400 million ($597 million) a year after the new company's fifth year of operation, the Iberia statement said.
