Pretty much the only airline that requires one is Southwest. Lets say you get the type, but have yet to get an interview (or you get one and fail). Lets say you interview with a company like Frontier. Good airline. Pay is not as good as Southwest. Probably a company you would leave if you got offered a job at Southwest. You interview with Frontier, but they are weary about hiring you because they see that 737 type, and it shows you may leave for Southwest very early on in your career.

Why would they pay for your training if you may jump ship soon?
Just a thought provoker.
Just a thought after being provoked! If Frontier and the other airlines have a product (pilot job) that is superior to SWA no one would leave them. Oh I forgot, Chicken Little says the sky is about to fall on SWA (i.e. the fuel hedges are about to expire).

Sorry it seems this was a repeat.

Can you have the 737 Type Rating removed from your ratings?

On the other side of the coin. I have a good friend who got his 737 type and got hired with United prior to hearing from Southwest. He flys the 767 for them.

Nah, the sky is not falling. Considering SW has the market pricing power of Walmart, it only helps the competition who have copied, as much as practical, SW's business plan. SW, I believe, raised fares four times in 2006. Three times for fuel and once to cover pilot's raises. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. The legacy carriers can only benefit when SW raises prices and NO I don't fly for them.

Interesting? I can honestly say that I have no desire to fly heavy equipment. If it happens so be it, but I am not going to lose any sleep in anticipation. Looking at the pay scales currently and my current 401k/profit sharing account I would still say I made the right decision (with some good fortune mixed in). The question would be would your friend trade positions with me right now? Would he be honest about it?

It is always better to be lucky than good!

Oscar,

To clarify, my post was in response to those implying a 737 type was a bad thing to have on their liscense as it could be construed by other potential employers as wanting to work for Southwest first. My apologies if you thought I was referring to your post or something else. Southwest is number one on my radar at the moment.

My friend is also on military leave and just returned (6 Jan) from a year in Iraq flying King Airs. He was one of the unfortunate that was furloughed after 9-11 but United has called him back.

So to reiterate my point for my last post; I don't believe having a 737 type rating on your liscense is a bad thing at all.

I have thanked him when I talked to him last week. He was happy to be back home.

I hit my 20 year date tomorrow (Army) and hope to join you at Southwest some day. Good luck to you as well.
