Default Looking for shared time-builing - N.Virginia

Hi all,

I am a sub-100hour private pilot who is new to the Northern Virginia area and I'm starting my instrument rating here soon. I've given some consideration to doing part 141 so as to avoid the 50 hours XC PIC but, ultimately, I love to fly and I think 50 more XC hours would be a good thing. Plus, I found a really affordable aircraft that I could rack up some of these hours in.

My question: Is there anyone in this area (aircraft is at KHEF Manassas, VA) who would like to switch off saftey pilot duties / hood flying so that we may accumulate the required XC PIC? I would be available for maybe 5 hours a week. Perhaps more or less, if your schedule so dictates.

Please PM me if you are interested. I'm ready to get going here in the next week or two.

All the best,
bmart

Hey bmart,

Your proposition sounds very intriguing. I can't PM you until you get the required 10 public posts under your belt. Any info on the type of aircraft or hourly rate?

Thanks,
Rick T.

RW-

Yeah, I probably can't PM either as I just registered here yesterday. No worries.

There are a few affordable options at Manassas. The most affordable aircraft available there for rent is a C152 (actually IFR certified w/ dual VORs) at $80/hr wet. I should mention that I think this is the least expensive aircraft for rent within roughly 1 million miles of DC.

There are also a number of C172s for about $120, an Arrow at $130, and a DA-20 for $120. To my mind, those are all good prices for this neighborhood.

I was leaning towards the C152, simply because it is not important how fast I get to CHO or SHD, but rather that I get there affordably in a reliable aircraft. That said, I could be convinced to do it another way.

Also, if anyone knows of another forum set up specifically for sharing time, please let me know. I went to safetypilotclub.com, but it looks dead there. Perhaps there is no demand.

Hello bmart-

I see you are looking for someone to fly with I live in the Northern Virginia area and I fly out of Manassas KHEF. I rent from Dulles Aviation at Manassas. You need to try pilotsharetheride.com good website.

I looked at that website. I wouldn't normally pay for a subscription to a service that I've never seen or used. Is it of high quality? Are there many pilots on there looking to share time? Are any of them located near KHEF?

Thanks.

Bmart,

I have an IFR Certified 152 down in NC and do safety pilot/IFR Sim flights with folks. You can email me, which is my username here at gmail.com, to get an idea of what it would be to fly with me. I think you'd be surprised, even with the plane having to be flown up to your area in order for us to meet.

I've used pilotshareride in the past (note: it was a free site until about a month or so away). I found a local to me guy and a guy from Norfolk that I've flown with; resulting in approx 15 hrs to date (both have been out of town for awhile recently due to work).

I am a member at pilots share the ride. It isn't a very busy site either.

I am in Norfolk and fly out of CPK. I have a C172 Nav II that goes for 135 an hour wet that I would be willing to share. I may be able to come pick you up if we worked something out. I fly from KCPK to 8G6 about twice a month so I fly right over you.

CAMPINGALAN where are you in NC? I am always looking for cheap time and have never flown a 152. I am guessing at 6'2" and 260 it would be a bit tight.

Well, I bit the bullet and signed up at pilotsharetheride.com. Apart from having to pay for something that seems like it should be free, I was pleasantly surprised. I found quite a few pilots who fit the bill for safety pilot duties that can and do fly from KHEF. And although it is not as active as this forum (few sites are), everyone I've spoken with so far has still been interested in flying. Perhaps that is more a testament to the undying nature of pilots' love of flying, rather than to the liveliness of the website.

In any case, I'm game to get together with anyone on here that would like to look outside and log XC PIC while I get a neck ache doing hood work.
