Default Plane Rentals?

I started flying about a month ago. I'm taking courses @ my local college to get an associates degree in aviation while I fly as often as I can at the airport to build up my flight time and go through my lessons. I'm hoping to have my PPL sometime this fall which brings me to my question...

What do all of you fly? The people here who own planes can obviously fly their own, but I find it difficult to imagine that owning a plane is an option for everyone here.

The planes I fly now are owned by the college, and used only for students flying with a CFI or soloing. So once I get my PPL and wanted to take a friend or family member up for a ride, I'm wondering what my options are...

You can rent from any local FBO after a checkout. Your checkout will be with an instructor and he may ask you to do various tasks similar to your checkride or he may just have you do a few touch and goes. In any case relax because as long as you fly safe you pass and you will be able to rent at your whim.

You could also join a flying club in your area. This is a link which will list the flying clubs in your area. I have never joined one but they seem like a good idea. They can be small (ex. 1 plane 5-10 members) or some of them have a few planes and a good sized membership. From what I have seen it is normally something like $1500 to join but you get that back when you leave and the rates are normally lower than at an typical flight school.

I think you'll find that when most pilots begin flying Part 121 they don't have the money or time to fly GA much.

But then again a lack of time/money is one of those things that will never really go away haha.

I don't think i'd use a flying club enough to join, but it's good to know that a check ride is all it takes and to be able to rent from a FBO. As long as the rates aren't too rediculous.

Slice- I'm still getting myself familair with the terminology... What do you mean by flying part 121 and GA. Does part 121 just mean flying with a private pilot certificate, and does GA just mean flying for fun?

121=airline flying. GA is anything on your own dime or Part 91 to me.

there's a flying club in sanford, fl ... long way from ny... they have some decent stuff 172 & 182 they are $40/hr -$48/hr tach time! dry of course but not so bad... requires a checkout and $50 membership fee or something like that... but not too bad... however I heard you need to sit through some gay class on how to pump fuel in the airplane (guess some people messed up for the rest of us). Also you should look at Airplane Partnerships and Flying Clubs to keep the costs of flying affordable. or Pilot Share The Ride they have a listing of people looking to share flight time and all that jazz
