I just hopped on a opportunity at a nearby school to start off a flight operation, but I'm not sure if the owner of the school is going to be able to put me on the planes insurance as a CFI.

The plane is currently insured for student training, but I'm thinking I might need to be a little proactive and get my own coverage. So my question is who here is currently self insured for CFI training and who do you have it through?

Realistically what rate of coverage should I get? I understand that for a little more I can add on non-owned plane coverage, but what type of amounts should I cover myself for? 1,000? 5,000? 10,000? The aircraft I'll be operating is a C-172.

I went through AVEMCO. 5,000 deductable, 1,000,000 a/c damage and 250,000 bodily injury is what I think I've got... I think About $250 a year for it all. I know that Aflac has some pretty good deals also. CFI insurance is pretty cheap considering how much coverage you get. Just make sure those student pilots don't have the brakes held at all on landing... I think I get to buy a new tire because of it...

AVEMCO is pretty good because as opposed to a lot of other insurance companies--especially aviation ones-- they underwrite their own policies. Makes it a lot less of a hassle to deal with if something happens down the line.

Another good thing to get is the AOPA legal coverage plan for commercial pilots. It is more expensive then the private pilot one, but it covers you when you are in commercial operations.

Thanks for the help guys. I believe the school put me on their insurance, (have to check the paperwork tomorrow) but I think I'm going to get my own anyway to protect against subrogation.

Seems like Avemco is the best deal right now and I'll check with AOPA also.
